Type material. Eudamus marpesus Hewitson, 1876 was described based on an unspecified number of specimens from Brazil which are part from Otto Staudinger collection. After examined the ZMHU collection, where the Staudinger material is housed, a male syntype corresponding the original description and mistakenly illustrated on Butterflies of America ( Warren et al. 2018) as the type specimen of Plesioneura compressa Möschler, 1877 was found with the following labels: / typus/ Brasilien / marpesus / P. compressa Moschler [sic]/ Coll. Staudinger/. To provide stability to the name proposed, this specimen is hereby designated as the lectotype of Eudamus marpesus Hewitson, 1876 and the following labels will be added: / Lectotypus / Lectotypus Eudamus marpesus Hewitson, 1876 Siewert, Mielke & Casagrande det. 2019/. These labels will be sent to the curator for the collection.
Diagnosis. FW length: males 16–19 mm (n=24) and females 18–21 mm (n=24). Telemiades marpesus is distinguished from the remaining species of the “ amphion group” by the following characters: greyish wing pattern; FW with developed hyaline spots and submarginal dark spots from R 3 to 2A; HW triangular; valva with a developed and rounded distal process covered by spines–like projections; fultura inferior distally bifid with distal margin pointed and base rounded; lamella antevaginalis with distal margin concave at median region but not as in T. fides ; lamella postvaginalis with lateral margin slightly thin.
Natural history. T. marpesus flies throughout the year.
Distribution. Telemiades marpesus is commonly found in forested habitats of Atlantic Forest, in the Brazilian states of Bahia to Rio Grande do Sul, in Misiones, Argentina, and in Paraguay.
Taxonomic discussion. Hewitson (1876) described this species in Eudamus ; Kirby (1877) transferred the species to Telegonus Hübner, [1819] and later back to Eudamus (= marpessus [sic]) (Kirby 1878). Bell (1949) proposed a new combination, Telemiades amphion marpesus , which has remained in use up to now. Here, we consider T. marpesus a separate species, owing to unique features of the wings and morphology of the male and female genitalia.
