Dasymutilla personata (Cameron)
Sphaerophthalma [ sic.] personata Cameron, 1895 . Biol. Cent.-Amer., Hym. 2:365. Holotype male, Mexico, Jalisco (Schumann) [BMNH] (examined).
Mutilla Sumichrasti Saussure, 1867 . Ann. Ent. Soc. Fr. 7:357. Holotype male, Mexico (Sumichrast) [MHNG] (examined) (In part, nec. ♀). Synonymy: Mickel (1964:164).
Diagnosis of Male (Plate C7L). This species can be diagnosed by the following combination of characters, including coloration. It lacks a pit filled with setae on sternum II, as well as a median area of fine, close punctures that bear setae. The pygidium lacks an apical fringe of setae. The setae of terga III through VI are mostly red, although there are also inconspicuous grayish setae. The integument is not entirely black. The integument of the first metasomal segment is black.
Female. Unknown.
Distribution. Mexico (Jalisco, Morelos, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Sinaloa).
Remarks. This species is known only from the male. It keys out easily. It can be distinguished from morphologically similar species by the inconspicuous grayish setae on the apical terga. This is a relatively uncommon species of which approximately two dozen specimens have been examined.
