Dasymutilla chiron (Blake)

Mutilla (Sphaeropthalma) Chiron Blake, 1872 . Trans. Amer. Ent. Soc. 4:72. Holotype male, Texas, Bosque County [ANSP] (examined).

Mutilla Ursula var. texana Cresson, 1875 . Trans. Amer. Ent. Soc. 5:120. Holotype male, Texas (Heiligbrodt) [ ANSP] (examined).

Diagnosis of Female ( Plate C3F View PLATE 3 ). This species can be diagnosed by the following unique combination of characters. The antennal scrobe is carinate, while the gena is ecarinate. The mesosoma is longer than broad, and possesses a scutellar scale. The integument of tergum II is orange, as are the setae of the head, mesosoma, and tergum II, while the apical fringe of tergum II is white, and the setae of the remaining terga are black.

Diagnosis of Male ( Plate C3G View PLATE 3 ). The male of this species can be diagnosed by this unique combination of characters. The antennal scrobe is not carinate. Tergum II has two yellow maculae, and the pygidium has an apical fringe of setae that is usually present (unlike in many species). The setae of the head and mesosoma are entirely black, while those of terga III to VI are orange. The pit on sternum II is variable in this species, and may be present or absent.

Distribution. USA (Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, New Mexico, Texas); Mexico (Chihuahua).

Remarks. This is an extremely common species. It is one in which the key characters vary within both females and males, which causes some problems in identification, as in D. bioculata and D. chiron ursula . The male may or may not have a pit on sternum II which results in its being placed in the key in two locations. Hundreds of specimens of both females and males have been examined.
