Oxysarcodexia bicolor Lopes, 1946 View in CoL

( Figs 54–56 View FIGURES 51–59 )

Oxysarcodexia bicolor Lopes, 1946b: 127 View in CoL ; Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Itatiaia. Holotype male, female allotype, five male paratypes and three female paratypes in MNRJ.

Diagnosis. Male. Length 8.0–9.0 mm. Postocular plate with golden pollinosity. Ocellar bristles weakly developed. Thorax with golden pollinosity, contrasting with the silvery pollinosity of the abdomen, T5 without golden pollinosity. Two well-differentiated posterior and 1–3 smaller anterior post-sutural dorsocentrals. Apical scutellar bristles absent. Legs brownish. T3 with 1 pair of lateral marginal bristles, T4 with 1 pair of median marginal and 2 pairs of lateral marginal bristles. ST5 with deep median cleft with margins almost parallel and with pilosity. Cercus sinuous in lateral view, with normal (i.e., as broad as median area), obliquely cut apex. Cercus with bristles ventrally absent only on middle portion. Cerci with distal third narrower than middle part in posterior view; parallel and with a distinct constriction mid length. Pregonite with expanded base, gradually narrowing to apex; unicolorous. Postgonite with expanded base and sudden narrowing at apex; unicolorous. Distiphallus with smooth ventroapical margin, rounded apex, a large dorsoapical swelling, sinuous dorsal outline and lateroapical expansions. Vesica symmetrical, with rounded median projection of main branch; distal lobes reduced, rounded, membranous, with spines on both dorsal and ventral surfaces.

Remarks. The S-shaped cercus ( Fig. 55 View FIGURES 51–59 ) sets O. bicolor apart from all other Oxysarcodexia species. The female of O. bicolor has an undivided T7 ( Tibana & Mello 1985).

Distribution. NEOTROPICAL. Argentina (Buenos Aires), Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina *, São Paulo).

Biology. This species was reared in the laboratory by Lopes (1973b), who did not provide further information about its development. It has been collected from human and dog feces and rotten cow liver ( Lopes 1973b; Mulieri et al. 2008, 2010, 2011, 2015). Madeira et al. (2016) collected this species in traps baited with chicken gizzard, bovine liver or raw fish. It has also been collected in woodlands along the Buenos Aires coastline and in suburban and rural areas of Almirante Brown District, near Buenos Aires ( Mulieri et al. 2008), pointing to some degree of synanthropy. The occurrence of this species was higher during the warmer months ( Mulieri et al. 2011). Oxysarcodexia bicolor is known to visit flowers of the shrub Scutia buxifolia Reissek (Rhamnaceae) ( Mulieri et al. 2010). Mulieri et al. (2015), collecting with dog feces and bovine liver, considered O. bicolor as a generalist, as no significant association with either of these baits was found.
