Panicum verticillatum
Linnaeus
,
Species Plantarum
, ed. 2, 1
: 82. 1762
.
"Habitat in Europa australi & Oriente." RCN: 475.
Lectotype
(Sherif & Siddiqi in El-Gadi,
Fl. Libya
145: 296. 1988): Herb. Linn. No. 80.7 (
LINN
)
.
Current name:
Setaria verticillata
(L.) P. Beauv.
(
Poaceae
).
Note:
Although
Kerguelen
(in
Lejeunia
, n.s., 75: 260. 1975) stated "Type:
...LINN"
, this is not accepted as a formal typification, for the reasons explained by Cafferty & al. (in
Taxon
49: 240. 2000). Cope (in Nasir & Ali,
Fl. Pakistan
143: 207. 1982) stated that the type was based on a Scheuchzer account but as this is not accompanied by an illustration, it cannot be a type. Meikle (
Fl. Cyprus
2: 1861. 1985) indicated unspecified material in LINN as type but failed to distinguish between sheets 80.7 and 80.13. As they are evidently not part of a single gathering, Art. 9.15 does not apply. Sherif &
Siddiqi's
type choice therefore appears to be the earliest.
