Bidens nivea
Linnaeus
,
Species Plantarum
2
: 833. 1753
.
"Habitat in Carolina." RCN: 6025.
Lectotype
(Parks in
Rhodora
75: 184. 1973): [icon] "
Bidens scabra
flore niveo, folio trilobato
" in Dillenius, Hort. Eltham. 1: 55, t. 47, f. 55. 1732.
Current name:
Melanthera nivea
(L.) Small
(
Asteraceae
).
Note:
Reveal & al. (in
Bartonia
56: 19. 1990) have argued that only part of the Dillenius illustration designated as the
lectotype
by Parks was cited under the supposedly
"typical"
part of
Linnaeus'
protologue, arguing for restriction of the type to a single leaf. However, this seems unhelpful and recent authors such as Strother (in Daniel,
Fl. Chiapas
5: 73. 1999) and Wagner & Robinson (in
Brittonia
53: 557. 2002) follow Parks.
