Paspalum virgatum
Linnaeus
,
Systema Naturae
, ed. 10, 2
: 855. 1759
.
["Habitat in Jamaica."] Sp. Pl., ed. 2, 1:81 (1762). RCN: 469.
Lectotype
(Hitchcock in
Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb.
12: 116. 1908):
Browne
, Herb. Linn. No. 79.6 (
LINN
)
.
Current name:
Paspalum virgatum
L.
(
Poaceae
).
Note:
Baum (in
Canad. J. Bot.
45: 1846. 1967) disagreed with
Hitchcock's
choice of a Browne collection as type, arguing that
Linnaeus'
name was instead based on a cited Sloane illustration. However, the Browne collection is clearly original material for this name, and
Hitchcock's
1908 type choice has priority.
