Diagnosis. With its pits on the carapace X. xelo resembles X. hystrix , but lacks the large spikes on the carapace. From other Xyphinus species X. xelo can be distinguished by the male palp, which is rather simple and similar to the palp of X. hystrix , but lacks the bifid apophysis ( Figs 22F, G View FIGURE 22 ; 2A–C View FIGURE 2 ). The female epigastric area is slightly protruding and shows a very short triangle-shaped structure ( Figs 24G View FIGURE 24 , 25A–D View FIGURE 25 ).

Description. Male. Total length 1.70 mm. Carapace: Orange-brown, ovoid in dorsal view, strongly elevated in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to 0.49 times its maximum width or less, with angular posterolateral corners, posterolateral edge with a pair of pits, anterolateral corners without projections, posterolateral surface with one pair of spikes ( Fig. 22A–C View FIGURE 22 ), surface of pars cephalica and sides smooth, fovea absent. Lateral margin with blunt denticles. Posterior margin with four lobate impressions, situated underneath the pits. Clypeus: Straight in frontal view, vertical in lateral view, high, ALE separated from edge of carapace by their radius or more ( Fig. 22D View FIGURE 22 ). Eyes: PME largest, all eyes oval. Posterior eye row straight from above, procurved from front. ALE separated by their radius to diameter, ALE and PLE touching, PLE and PME touching, PME touching ( Fig. 22A, D View FIGURE 22 ). Sternum: Longer than wide, sickle-shaped structures not touching, but elongated fan-like anteriorly ( Fig. 22B View FIGURE 22 ). Radial furrows opposite coxae III appearing as sclerotized impressions, elongated fan-like anteriorly ( Fig. 22B View FIGURE 22 ). Surface smooth. Mouthparts: Chelicerae slightly divergent, with swelling on anterior face, setae evenly scattered ( Fig. 22D View FIGURE 22 ). Labium rectangular, indented at middle, with 3-5 setae on anterior margin. Abdomen: Book-lung covers elliptical. Scuto-pedicel region with paired curved scutal ridges. Dorsal scutum orange brown, middle surface and sides smooth, anterior half without projecting denticles. Epigastric scutum not protruding. Postepigastric scutum with short posteriorly directed lateral apodemes ( Fig. 22B View FIGURE 22 ). Posterior spiracles connected by groove. Legs: Tibia with three, metatarsi with one trichobothria each. Harpoon-like hairs covering the distal part of metatarsi III and IV ( Fig. 22E View FIGURE 22 , arrow). Genitalia: Sperm pore small, situated in front of anterior spiracles. Trochanter normal size, unmodified. Femur one to two times as long as trochanter, attaching to patella subbasally; patella shorter than femur, tibia two times as long as patella, with two long and thick setae prolaterally, with three trichobothria ( Figs 22F View FIGURE 22 ; 23A View FIGURE 23 ). Cymbium pale orange, ovoid in dorsal view, fused with bulb, but with clearly defined seam between, bulb pale-orange, 1 to 1.5 times as long as cymbium, with several dark, rather short apophyses. Thin membranous outgrowth dorsally, dark plate ventrally ( Figs 22F, G View FIGURE 22 ; 23A–C View FIGURE 23 ).

Female. Total length 1.75 mm. Mouthparts: Chelicerae anterior face unmodified. Female palp spineless, femora with two spine-like hairs ventrally, tibia with three trichobothria and few stronger setae prolaterally ( Fig. 24E View FIGURE 24 ). Abdomen: Epigastric scutum sligthly protruding ( Fig. 24B, C View FIGURE 24 ). Legs: Harpoon-like hairs covering the distal part of metatarsi III and IV ( Fig. 24F View FIGURE 24 , arrow). Genitalia: Epigastric furrow narrow. Dark, very short, triangleshaped structure visible, surrounded by half-circle ( Figs 24G View FIGURE 24 ; 25A–D View FIGURE 25 ).
