Description. Adult. Colouration. Orange or yellow, with hardly any dark pattern except for black frons and brown coronal suture, margin of vertex and bases of pro- and mesotibiae. Antennal segments 4–6 ochreous basally, almost black apically. Throracic dorsum with indistinct white pattern consisting of spots and longitudinal lines. Membranes slightly lighter than sclerites. Younger specimens with fewer dark elements.

Structure. Antenna 4.0–4.6 times as long as head width. Clypeus, in ventral view, broadly truncate anteriorly. Rostrum moderately to very long, 0.5–0.8 times as long as head width, segment 3 1.1–2.1 times as long as segment 2. Forewing ( Fig. 183 View FIGURES 175–184 ) 2.9–3.1 times as long as head width, 2.8–2.9 times as long as wide; cell cu 1 0.6–0.7 times higher than wide; surface spinules in cell r 2 above bifurcation of M densely, irregularly spaced. Metatibia 0.9–1.1 times as long as head width. Terminalia as in Figs 192 View FIGURES 185–196 , 215–217 View FIGURES 197–220 . Male proctiger 0.5 times as long as head width. Paramere, in profile, with rectangular base and narrow lamellar apical portion; outer face with long, evenly spaced hairs; apex strongly sclerotised, forming an inward directed tooth; inner face with scattered long setae. Distal portion of aedeagus inflated in apical two thirds, bearing two ventral lobes in the middle; apex hook relatively long and narrow. Female proctiger 0.7–0.8 times as long as head width, dorsal outline almost straight with inconspicuous bump in the middle, apical process weakly inflated; circumanal ring 0.3 times as long as proctiger. Female subgenital plate 0.6–0.7 times as long as proctiger, ventral outline, in profile, concave at base, convex otherwise; apex forming large point.

Measurements (in mm) and ratios (2 ♂, 2 ♀). Head width ♂ 0.84, ♀ 0.90–0.94; antenna length ♂ 3.50–3.86, ♀ 3.64–3.86; forewing length ♂ 2.42–2.60, ♀ 2.60–2.96; male proctiger length 0.38–0.40; paramere length 0.20–0.22; length of distal segment of aedeagus 0.22–0.24; female proctiger length 0.66–0.76.

Fifth instar immature. Colouration. Sclerites light brown, membranes yellow. Antennal flagellum, tibiae, tarsi, the margins of the wing pads and the fore margin of the caudal plate dark brown or black.

Structure. Body 1.7 times as long as wide. Apical labial segment 0.7–1.0 times and antenna 3.7–4.7 times as long as forewing pad, respectively. Caudal plate 1.5 times as wide as long and 3.3 times as wide as circumanal ring; with two long dorsal submedian capitate setae near and longer than dorsal sectasetae ( Figs 15 View FIGURES 11–21 , 196 View FIGURES 185–196 ).

Measurements (in mm) and ratios (2 immature). Body length 1.82–2.00, antenna length 1.98–2.16; forewing pad length 0.46–0.54; caudal plate width 0.62–0.72.

Etymology. Adjective, feminine form. From Latin rostratus = with rostrum, for the long rostrum.

Distribution. Brazil (MG, MS, MT, PI).

Host plant, biology and habitat. Hymenaea martiana Hayne , H. stigonocarpa Hayne ; adults were also collected on H. courbaril L. , which is a likely host. The immatures are free-living.

Comments. Platycorypha rostrata differs from other psyllids associated with Hymenaea as indicated in the key. From P. atrifrons , with which it shares the very long rostrum, it differs in the basally slightly wider paramere and ventral lobes on the distal segment of the adeagus, in the male, and the small dorsal hump on the proctiger and the ventrally more angularly curved subgenital plate in the female. Platycorypha pinnata and P. rostrata share the ventral lobes on the distal segment of the aedeagus. Platycorypha rostrata differs from P. pinnata in the wider apical half of the paramere, and the slightly large and more slender hook on the distal segment of the aedeagus.

In P. rostrata the length of the apical labial segment varies considerably: from about as long as to about twice as long as labial segment 2. The variation is mostly between and not within populations. As there are no other significant differences between the two forms, in particular not in the male terminalia, we interpret this as intraspecific variation. We include, however, only the form with long rostrum from MG and MS in the type series.
