Diagnosis. Hypandrium three times taller than wide in lateral view. Processus terminalis narrow, strongly point- ed, as long as hypandrium. Parameres anteriorly, slightly bending downwards, slightly widened posteriorly, with pointed end in lateral view.

Description (n = 10). Adult males. Head. Head capsule brown, eyes black. Antenna 29–31 segmented, brown, scape and pedicel slightly longer than wide; basal flagellar segments slightly longer than wide, distal ones as long as wide; scale-like hairs distally on pedicel and on flagellar segments, spirally arranged, ordinary hairs also present. Thorax. Brown, with pattern of dark brown shoulder spots. Legs uniformly pale brown. Wings. Forewing length 2.0– 2.5 mm, hindwing length 1.5–2.0 mm. Membrane pale brown, semitranslucent Figs. 2A, B View FIGURE 2 ). Male genitalia. Gonarcus and hypandrium joined ( Figs. 2E, F View FIGURE 2 ); hypandrium three times higher than wide in lateral view ( Figs. 2C, D View FIGURE 2 ), without processus terminalis. Ventrally complete anterior apodeme of hypandrium sharply curved backwards medially, reaching the strongly sclerotized base of median incision ( Figs. 2G, H View FIGURE 2 ). Remaining processus terminalis as long as hypandrium, narrow and strongly pointed distally, anteromedially slightly widened in caudal view. Apical median incision long and narrow, parallel, U-shaped ( Fig. 2G View FIGURE 2 ). Processus lateralis reduced, processus intermedialis absent. Gonarcus narrow ( Fig. 2F View FIGURE 2 ); ventral apodeme well-sclertized and complete. Stylus fused into an arch underneath parameres ( Figs. 2I, J, K View FIGURE 2 ). Parameres dorsally flattened in both ends, slightly bending downwards anteriorly, distal end apparently hollow, round-shaped, pointed in lateral view ( Figs. 2L, M View FIGURE 2 ). Penis sclerotized, as two parallel rods strongly curved downwards ( Fig. 2M View FIGURE 2 ).

Comments. Coniopteryx josephus , new species, is similar to C. isthmicola Meinander 1972 , but with hypandrium generally narrower in lateral view, apex of parameres rounded, spoon-shaped, and directed caudally, while in C. isthmicola apex of parameres is pointed and bent sharply downwards in lateral view; also, parameres are rather broad in caudal view in the new species, while in C. isthmicola those are very thin in caudal view, and curved downwards. One specimen of the new species, from Morelos, presented an interrupted apodeme in the hypandrium, however other traits matched the species.

Habitat. Tropical dry forest (Morelos, Oaxaca) and Mexican lime orchard (Colima).

Phenology. February, May, June, July, November, December.

Etymology. Named, with gratitude, for the first author’s father, Mr. José Sarmiento.

Distribution. Colima, Morelos, Oaxaca.
