Female. Body length 2.0– 2.5 mm; fore wing length 2.2–2.6 mm.
Head. Smooth and mat, with scattered setae; 1.20–1.25x wider than mesoscutum. Face 1.6–1.7x broader than long, smooth and polished. Clypeus 2.1–2.2x broader than long. Malar space 0.35x eye height in frontal view. In lateral view, eyes 1.2–1.5x longer than temple. Maximum width of lateral ocellus 0.47–0.49x ocell-ocular distance. Antenna about as long as fore wing, 20–23 segmented; first flagellomere about 4.5x longer than wide.
Mesosoma . 1.8–1.9x longer than high. Mesonotum 1.24–1.44x longer than width of mesoscutum. Pronotum dorsally with crenulate sulcus and distinct mid-longitudinal carina anteriorly, posteriorly crenulate with arched carina enclosing a crescent moon shaped area; about 0.9x longer than vertex, the posterior region about 2x longer than anterior region; laterally smooth and mat, scattered setae along posterior margin. Mesonotum smooth with very fine fingerprint-like microsculpturing; mesoscutum covered with setae, scutellar sulcus with one line of setae, scutellum with scattered setae over surface; notauli weak to virtually absent dorsally, shallow and smooth, about 0.2x longer than mesoscutum; mid pit narrow, 0.31–0.47x the length of mesoscutum; scutellum 1.1–1.3x longer than wide, smooth and polished; scutellar sulcus 0.24–0.30x longer than wide, with one median carina; mesoscutellar trough costate proximally, smooth distally. Metanotum with weak median carina; laterally smooth with scattered setae. Mesopleuron mostly bare, with few scattered setae concentrated on anterior corner and ventrally; sternaulus short but deep and crenulate posteriorly, faintly extending anteriorly toward epicnemial carina; anterior corner of mesopleuron smooth. Epicnemial carina present ventrally, incomplete. Metapleuron smooth and mat, with long and scattered setae. Propodeum mostly smooth and mat, with fine and irregularly strigate surface (microsculpturing not visible under light microscope, however the reflection is very distinct from a polished surface); median carina irregular, areola irregular to absent anteriorly, with distinct cross-bridge and one pair of transverse lateral carinae, the anterior pair sometimes indicated but irregular. Hind coxa 1.7–1.9x longer than wide, 0.87–0.96x as long as metasomal TI. Hind basitarsus about 0.37–0.39x as long as hind tibia. Hind tarsal claws without basal lobe.
Wings. Fore wing. Stigma 2.8–3.2x longer than broad; vein r arising from middle of stigma. Vein r 0.47–0.51x longer than vein 3RSa. Vein 2RS straight, 0.81–0.93x longer than 3RSa. Vein 3 RSa 0.45–0.48 x 3 RSb and 1.85– 1.96x as long as vein r-m. Vein 1 Cub 2.1–2.7x vein 1CUa. Vein (RS+M)b distinct, not pigmented. Vein 1-1AC 0.18–0.21x longer than vein 2-1 A. Hind wing. Vein M +CU 2.6–2.8x longer than 1M. Vein cu-a 0.86–0.96x as long as 1M. Vein r-m 0.82–0.88x as long as 1M.
Metasoma. TI 1.13–1.15x as long as apical width; rugose to areolate-rugose medially, laterally weakly rugose to smooth with fine and irregular strigate surface; dorsal carinae almost complete, converging but not meeting; dorsope deep and large. Metasoma beyond petiole weakly sclerotized; TII 1.58–1.75x longer than TIII. Ovipositor short and straight, 0.47–0.69x as long as hind tibia; ovipositor sheaths 0.61–0.84x longer than ovipositor.
Color. Dark brown. Antenna brown, scapus and pedicel yellowish to honey yellow, first flagellomere frequently honey yellow to light brown at least basally. Mandibles yellowish with brown teeth. Palpi whitish. Fore and mid legs yellow: hind legs honey yellow, all tarsi pale brown.
Male. Similar to female. Body length 2.5 mm; antenna with 2.8 mm and 27 segments; fore wing length 2.7 mm. Fore wing vein r arising slightly basad from middle of stigma, and vein 1-1AC much longer than on female, 0.42x longer than vein 2-1A; hind wing M+CU relatively shorter.
Biology. Unknown
Comments. This species resembles A. cacildis sp. n. in the color pattern, except the dark brown pronotum that is yellow in A. cacildis sp. n., and the irregularly finely strigate microsculpturing over most of the body surface. These two species can be distinguished by the length of the hind wing vein 1M, which is almost as long as vein 1cu-a in A. nothofagus sp. n. and about 2x longer in A. cacildis sp. n. A. nothofagus sp. n. and A. flamengo sp. n. are the only known species with a median carina on metanotum, but the carina is relatively weak in A. flamengo sp. n. The presence of a line of setae at scutellar sulcus is shared with A. monteiroi sp. n., A. compressithorax sp. n. and A. belshawi sp. n. The undescribed male photographed by Whitfield et al. (2004, Figs 10–13 View FIGURES 2 – 13 ), probably belongs to this newly described species.
Distribution. Chile, Conguillo and Nahuelbuta National Parks.
Etymology. The species is named in reference to its distribution along with the southern beech genus Nothofagus in Chile.
Type material. Holotype, female ( CNC). “ CHILE: Cautín 1150 m / Conguillo Nat. Park / 4.ii.1988, Araucania / Nothofagus s.s. / L. Masner col.”
Paratypes. CHILE. 3♀ ( CNC), same data as holotype ; 1♂, Region IX, Nahuelbuta Nat. Park, 37.809° S 73.015° W (37°48'32.4"S 73°00'54.0"W), 1,120 m, 9–12.I.2000, Malaise trap, D.W. Webb & D.K. Yestes col.
