Type material. Holotype: UCM 4419, deposited in UCM, collected by S.A. Rohwer in 1907 during Florissant expedition. Isolated nearly complete forewing and hind wing.
Type locality and horizon. USA: Colorado: Teller County: Florissant: Station 13 (see Cockerell 1907b); Eocene (late Priabonian; Florissant Formation) .
Diagnosis. May be distinguished from other species of the genus by a combination of the following character states: sides of im (MA, MP) parallel and converging basally at steeper angle [ A. profracta , A. sanikwa , A. fracta : sides of im converging basally at low angle]; 2m-cu located distinctly proximad middle of im [ A. profracta , A. sanikwa : slightly distad or slightly proximad middle of im]; costal margin not convex in middle of costal space [ A. fracta , A. cockerelli sp. nov.: convex through costal space].
Redescription. Forewing 14.9 mm long, 4.9 mm wide (length to width ratio 3.04). Costal space moderately broad, widest at level of basal crossvein 1sc-ra. Subcostal veinlets simple proximad pterostigmal region, rather widely spaced. Pterostigma distinct, long, fuscous; incorporated veinlets not discernible. Distal part of Sc not discernible. Subcostal space moderately narrow; basal subcostal crossvein located far distad origin of RP; distal crossveins not preserved. Distal part of RA not preserved; at least one veinlet distad pterostigma. RA space broad, with 19 rather closely spaced crossveins. RP originating relatively close to wing base (at ca. 0.20 of complete length). Anterior trace of RP slightly zigzagged distally, apically forked, with 11 pectinate branches; eight distal branches once forked (RP3–RP9, RP11), RP10 simple. Basal crossvein between RP, M (1r-m) short, connecting anterior trace of RP, MA within im at proximal one-tenths of its length. M probably not fused with R basally; curved inward before its fork; dividing to MA, MP far distad origin of RP. MA, MP each deeply forked at Psc. Crossvein between MA, MP (1im) long. Im elongate (length/width ratio 3.72). Psm poorly developed, zigzagged. Crossvein 1m-cu located approximately at origin of CuP; 2m-cu connected im, CuA at nearly proximal one-thirds of im. CuA probably with two simple branches. CuA continuing into well developed, only slightly zigzagged Psc, which continues into outer gradate series of crossveins. CuP deeply forked. 1icu located rather far from origin of CuP; 2icu connecting CuA, anterior branch of CuP. c1: c2 length ratio ca. 0.40:1. One very short crossvein connects CuA, A1. A1 simple. A2 fragmentarily preserved. Two gradate series of crossveins nearly parallel; inner series with 11 crossveins distad MA; outer series with 10 crossveins distad RP2.
Hind wing 13.2 mm long, 4.2 mm wide. Costal space moderately narrow, slightly dilated at level of origin of RP. Subcostal veinlets simple proximad pterostigmal region, rather widely spaced. Pterostigma distinct, long, fuscous; incorporated veinlets discernible only proximally and distally. Distal part of Sc not discernible. Subcostal space very narrow; basal subcostal crossvein not detected; one of distal crossveins at proximal beginning of pterostigma, other crossveins not discernible. RA entering margin before wing apex; three short veinlets distad pterostigma. RA space broad, with 16 rather closely spaced crossveins. RP originating close to wing base (at ca. 0.12 of complete length). Anterior trace of RP slightly zigzagged distally, apically shallowly forked, with 10 pectinate branches; probably all forked. Basal crossvein between RP, M (1r-m) rather long, connecting anterior trace of RP, MA within im at proximal one-thirds of its length. Psm poorly developed, zigzagged. M not fused with R basally; slightly curved inward before its fork; dividing to MA, MP far distad origin of RP. MA zigzagged, forked distad Psc. MP slightly zigzagged before Psc, then strongly curved; forked distad Psc. Proximal crossvein between MA, MP (1im) very long, distal crossvein (2im) rather short. Crossvein 1m-cu located far distad origin of CuP; 2m-cu connecting MP, anterior branch of CuA distad 1im. CuA pectinate, with two simple branches. Psc formed by MP, MA, basal branches of RP and crossveins connecting them, continues into outer gradate series. CuP basally perpendicular to A1, then these are fused for long distance; CuP simple. 1icu located far from origin of CuP, connecting CuA, anterior branch of CuP. One very short crossvein connects CuA, A1. A2 strongly arched; A3 incompletely preserved, simple, straight. One very short crossvein connecting A1, A2 slightly proximad origin of CuP. Two gradate series of crossveins: inner series with 10 crossveins distad MA; outer series with 12 crossveins including crossveins of Psc. Jugal lobe semispherical in shape.
