Zeravschania latifolia Pimenov & Kljuykov View in CoL , sp. nov. ( Fig. 2).
Type:— AFGHANISTAN. Prov. Ghorat: in faucibus calc. infra Perjuman (Partcheman), ca 33°10’N, 63°52’E, ca. 1850 m. 30 July–01 August 1962, Rechinger 19023 (holotype E!, isotype E!, W) GoogleMaps
Perennial polycarpic, totally glabrous herbs, 100–150 cm tall; tap-roots slightly woody; caudex branching, densely covered with fibrous remains of petioles and sheaths of dead leaves; stems solid, 4–9 mm in diam. at the base, rounded, corymbosely branching at the middle; radical leaves more or less numerous, petioles 3–7 cm long, solid, round in cross-section; leaf blades 10–15 cm long, 4–10 cm wide, rhombic in outline, twice pinnatisect; basal primary segments petiolulate, petiolules up to 3.5 cm long; secondary segments sessile, 3–5 cm long, 1.8–2.5 cm wide, ovoid, coriaceous, rather shallowly lobed, rounded at tip, coarsely toothed at the margin, at the base cuneate and slightly decurrent; stem leaves 13–15, lower ones with thin petioles, lanceolate sheaths and twice pinnate lanceolate blade lobes; upwardly decreasing in size and becoming entire, with lanceolate or triangular sheaths. Terminal umbels of 3–5 rays, 2.5–3.5 cm in diam., lateral ones of 2–4 more or less equal slightly ribbed rays, 1.5–3 cm long; bracts 4–5, lanceolate to ovate, undivided, short, at the margin narrowly white-membranous; umbellets of 10–18 flowers, up to 1 cm in diam.; bracteoles 4–5, lanceolate to ovate, undivided, acute, at the margin white-membranous, longer than pedicels; pedicels 1–3.5 mm long, unequal, slightly angled; calyx teeth short, rounded at tip; petals white, 0.8–1 mm long, without claw, slightly emarginate, with tip curved inwards, with one secretory duct; young fruit elliptic, 2 mm long, 1 mm wide; stylopods conical; ribs subinconspicuous; commissure broad; vallecular secretory ducts (vittae) solitary, broad; commissural secretory ducts 2, broad.
Phenology:—Young fruiting stage of seasonal development is during the second half of July to the beginning of August.
Distribution and habitat:— Only two localities are known in Ghorat province of W Afghanistan ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ). According to herbarium label information the species grows on open arid slopes in the middle mountain belt.
Etymology:— The specific epithet refers to the broad leaf segments unknown in closely related Zeravschania species.
Additional specimen examined (paratype):— AFGHANISTAN. Prov. Ghorat: Kouh Davandar (près Karokh), coteau aride, 26 June 1959, Lindberg 630 ( W!) .
