Woodsia montevidensis (Spreng.) Hieron., Bot. Jahrb. Syst. View in CoL 22: 363. 1896.

= Woodsia crenata (Kunze) Hieron. var. pallidipes Hieron., Bot. Jahrb. Syst. View in CoL 34(4): 440. 1904; two syntypes from Bolivia, lectotype from

Colombia (see Arana et al. 2016).

= Woodsia montevidensis var. fuscipes Hieron., Hedwigia View in CoL 46: 322. 1907. Lectotype (chosen by Arana et al., 2016: 16):— Argentina. Salta:

Prov. de Salta , Los Potreros al pie del Nevado del Castillo, Lorentz & Hieronymus 138 (B-200171577; isolectotypes B, CORD) ; two isosyntypes are from Bolivia: Zongo , 2850 m, M. Bang 878 (B-200171572; isosyntypes MO, UC!, US) ; Illimani between Pongo and

Apachate, Stübel 1239 (B-200171573).

Range: —Hispaniola; mountains from Venezuela to central Argentina; southeastern Brazil, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina; South Africa. In Bolivia, known from CH, CO, LP, OR, PO, SC, and TA.

Ecology: —Very common, with over 200 collections seen from Bolivia; usually among rocks and in rock fissures, in grassy and bushy pastures, on rock faces, stream banks, and on old walls, rarely inside closed forests; 700–4700 m in the Andes, down to 200 m in coastal Peru. The plants are deciduous, and often in the dry winter season only the petiole bases can be seen emerging from rock crevices.

Notes: —Highly variable in overall size, degree of blade dissection, rhizome scale coloration, and extent to which the segment margins are revolute; may well comprise an unresolved species complex. Several species and infraspecific taxa have been described from the Andes, and these names are currently all placed in synonymy under W. montevidensis ( Arana et al. 2016) .
