Wappesellus cavus View in CoL sp. nov.
( Figs. 17–20 View FIGURES 13 – 22. 13 – 16 )
Description. Integument dark-brown, almost black, with violaceous reflex; coxae, femoral peduncle and about basal half of club orangish.
Head. Frons finely, abundantly punctate; pubescence whitish-gray, not obscuring integument. Antennal tubercles with sculpture and pubescence as on frons. Coronal suture distinct from base to near margin of eyes. Central area between antennal tubercles and superior ocular lobes smooth, glabrous. Sculpture on vertex as on frons; pubescence slightly sparser. Gena about as long as half length of inferior ocular lobes. Distance between superior ocular lobes equal to 0.7 times scape length; distance between inferior ocular lobes, in frontal view, equal to 1.0 times scape length. Antennae as long as 1.4 times elytral length, attaining elytral apex at distal half of antennomere XI; antennal formula (ratio) based on antennomere III: scape = 0.46; pedicel = 0.14; IV = 0.78; V = 0.46; VI = 0.43; VII = 0.36; VIII = 0.36; IX = 0.32; X = 0.32; XI = 0.43.
Thorax. Pronotum coarsely, densely punctate, except a smooth longitudinal band on disk; without setae or distinct pubescence. Sides of prothorax coarsely, abundantly punctate. Metasternum finely roughened laterally; pubescence sparse [barely visible]. Elytra with sides vertical from humerus to near apex.
Abdomen. Urosternites finely, abundantly punctate; with short pubescence, not obscuring integument. Legs. Side of metafemoral club with moderately long, abundant setae dorsally, mainly inside of depression. Metatarsomere I as long as 0.7 times II–III together.
Dimensions in mm (male (?)). Total length, 3.15; length of prothorax at center, 0.70; widest width of prothorax, 0.95; anterior width of prothorax, 0.65; posterior width of prothorax, 0.85; humeral width, 1.20; elytral length, 2.3.
Type material. Holotype male (?) from BRAZIL, Rondônia: 62 km SW Ariquemes (near Rancho Grande farm), 8–20.XI.1994, J. E. Eger col. ( FSCA).
Etymology. Latin, cavus = hollow; relating to the dorsal surface of metafemoral club.
