18. Tabernaemontana venusta (J. F. Morales)A.O. Simões & M.E. Endress View in CoL in Simões, et al. (2010:788). ≡ Stemmadenia venusta J. F. Morales (2005: 360–361) . ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ).

Type:— MEXICO. Oaxaca: Palomares, Juchitán, Montan de la Pedrera, 14–17 Apr 1970, MacDougall s.n. (Holotype: NY).

Shrubs of unknown height. Petioles 4–7 mm long; blades 4–10.5 × 1.5–3.8 cm, membranaceous, elliptic, base acute to obtuse, apex acuminate, margin entire, glabrous on both sides. Inflorescence 3–6 flowers, peduncle 5–8 mm; bracts 1.5–5.5 mm long, ovate, scarious; pedicels 0.4–1 cm long; sepals subequal, 7–8 × 2–3.5 mm, ovate to elliptic, acute, inconspicuous venation; corolla hypocrateriform, yellow, tube 1.1–1.3 × 0.1–0.3 cm, twisted around the anthers, staminal ridges present, suprastaminal corona of five wing-shaped lobes present, opposite the anthers, along the tube, limb lobes 0.9–1.1 × 0.7–0.8 cm, obovate; stamens inserted below the middle of the corolla tube, anthers 3 mm long, included, probably yellow; pistil 3 mm long, nectary absent. Follicles unknown.

Habitat and phenology: —Tropical deciduous forest to 200 m a.s.l. Flowering known only in April.

Distribution: —Endemic to Mexico. In the state of Oaxaca ( Fig. 6f View FIGURE 6 ).

Conservation status: —Endangered (EN). Insufficient information is available to perform assessments for this species in as much detail as could be desired. Tabernaemontana venusta is known only from the type material. In searches of specimens in several herbaria no evidence of another collection of the species was found. Therefore, we suggest including it in the category of endangered.

Common names and uses: —There are no common names or uses registered.

Notes: —This species resembles T. hannae in the foliose sepals and slightly urceolate corolla, but the stamens in T. venusta are inserted in the base of the corolla. One specimen in Chiapas has been determined as this species (J. A. Espinosa & C. A. Pérez 782), but examination of various specimens collected in the area allowed it to be assigned to T. hannae .
