Type material. CHINA: Holotype ♂, Manghe (35.31°N, 112.50°E), Yangcheng, Jincheng , Shanxi Province, 594 m, 16.VII.2012, coll. Wei Guan and Xiuchun Wang, genitalia slide no. LSH15354. GoogleMaps
Diagnosis. Strophedra paraspinifera is similar to S. nigrifusca with the phallus in both species bearing a ventral spine. Strophedra paraspinifera can be distinguished by the costa of the valva more deeply concave, the cucullus right-angled at the ventro-basal corner, and the presence of cornuti in the male genitalia. In S. nigrifusca the costa of the valva is slightly concave, the cucullus is bluntly angled at the ventro-basal corner, and cornuti are absent in the male genitalia.
Description. Adult ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 3 – 10 ) wingspan 12.0 mm. Head: Earthy yellow. Antenna deep earthy yellow on dorsal surface, deep yellow on ventral surface. Labial palpus slender, nearly reaching upper margin of compound eye, yellowish on dorsal surface, grayish yellow on ventral surface. Thorax: Dorsum and tegula brown except yellow on posterior margin. Foreleg with coxa and femur grayish yellow on dorsal surface, yellow on ventral surface, tibia brown on outer surface, dark yellow on inner surface, tarsus blackish brown basally and yellow apically; mid- and hindlegs with coxae and femora deep yellow, tibiae deep gray on outer surface, yellowish on inner surface, tarsi gray to blackish brown basally and yellow apically on outer surface, yellow on inner surface. Forewing widening towards rounded apex, length about two times of maximum width; costa arched towards apex; termen blunt, slightly oblique, with an indistinct notch below apex; dark brown, with scales yellow tipped; costa with nine pairs of yellow strigulae, basal three pairs ill defined; median fascia from below third pair of strigulae oblique to 2/3 of discal cell on anterior margin, then extending ventrad to middle of dorsum, anterior half leaden with light blue gloss, posterior half dark brown with scales yellow tipped, inner margin ill defined; widening dark brown band from costa between fourth and fifth pair of strigulae oblique to upper corner of discal cell, then extending ventrad to before tornus, located beyond median fascia; leaden streak with light blue gloss below fifth and seventh pair of strigulae respectively, streak below fifth pair of strigulae extending to beyond upper corner of discal cell, then oblique inside to beyond lower corner of discal cell, touching inner edge of ocelloid patch, streak below seventh pair of strigulae oblique to notch of termen; ocelloid patch with black dot at 2/3 of M1 and M2, inner edge leaden with light blue gloss, rather wide and vertical above tornus, outer edge indicated only by a leaden spot with light blue gloss between M1 and M2; between two light blue leaden streaks placed four short horizontal black dashes from below seventh pair of strigulae oblique to notch of termen; four black dots spaced along termen from below notch to beyond tornus; fringe dark gray, basal line black gray. Hindwing brown, costa grayish white at base overlapped by forewing; fringe yellowish gray, basal line blackish brown. Abdomen: Male genitalia ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 11 – 15 ) with tegumen about 2/3 length of valva, somewhat pointed at top. Gnathos subtrapezoidal. Valva narrow at base, slightly widened to 1/5, then narrowed to middle; costa concave medially by approximately 130°, with indistinct basal process; basal cavity well defined, ovate; neck distinct, more than half width of valva at base; sacculus with a bunch of fine setae at base, with long hairs extending from near base to neck; cucullus elongate ovate, about 1/2 length of valva, right angled at ventro-basal corner, covered with dense fine setae from ventro-basal corner to apex, with bristles along ventral margin, with rows of short spines extending from above ventro-basal corner upward across mid-width of cucullus. Phallus with basal half uniform, distal half gradually narrowed, with a spine arising from ventral 2/3 reaching before apex and parallel with phallus; cornuti consisting of a row of fine spines in distal 1/3 of vesica ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 11 – 15 a). Female unknown.
Distribution. China (Shanxi).
Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin para- (parallel) and spiniferus (spinous), referring to the spine arising from ventral 2/3 of the phallus extending parallel with the phallus.
