Inflorescence 1–3(–5) flowers, peduncle 1.6–10 cm long; bracts 2–4 mm long, ovate, scarious; pedicels 0.4–1.5 cm long; sepals unequal, 2 series, external 5–10 × 0.4–0.6 mm, internal 10–20 × 0.6–10 mm, ovate to oblong, obtuse, inconspicuous venation; corolla hypocrateriform, yellow to yellowish, tube 2–3 × 0.5–0.6 cm, twisted around the anthers, five staminal ridges present, suprastaminal corona of five wing-shaped lobes present, opposite the anthers, along the tube, limb lobes 1.3–1.8 × 1–1.2 cm, obovate; stamens inserted above the middle of the corolla tube, anthers 4–5 mm long, included, yellow; pistil 1.2–2.5 cm long, nectary present. Follicles 4.5–9 × 4–7 cm, subglobose to obliquely ellipsoid, apiculate, with 2 lateral ridges, sometimes not evident, lenticellate, brownish, warty, glabrous; seeds 0.9–1.1 cm long.
Habitat and phenology: —Tropical deciduous forest, evergreen forest, oak forest, xerophilous scrub, and secondary vegetation, with an altitudinal range from 10–1600 m a.s.l. Flowering and fruiting throughout the year.
Distribution:— Mexico (Campeche, Chiapas, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Tabasco and Veracruz, Fig. 6e View FIGURE 6 ) and throughout Central America.
Conservation status: —Least concern (LC). Tabernaemontana donnell-simithi is widely distributed and occurs in several vegetation types, and it has an estimated EOO of 689,753 km 2 and AOO of 512 km 2. It grows in a variety of vegetation types, elevations, and climatic conditions. In addition, it flowers and fruits throughout the year and tolerates cultivation and anthropic disturbances, suggesting that this species easily adapts to harsh environments (Sheweiki & Howe 2009). We consider that it is not under any kind of threat.

Notes: — Tabernaemontana donnell-smithii was described from Guatemala and has distinctive morphological characteristics; the sepals are clearly unequal, with the inner sepals as long as the corolla tube; the stamens are inserted near the middle of the corolla tube and mainly covered by the sepals. The fruits are large with a thick pericarp ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 , 10 View FIGURE 10 ). Leeuwenberg (1994), Juárez-Jaimes et al. (2007) and Villaseñor (2016) mentioned that this species is present in the Mexican states along the Pacific and Atlantic Slopes. Examination of various specimens allowed us to adjust its distribution to include the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tabasco, Veracruz and the Yucatan Peninsula. This species resembles T. pauli (Leeuwenb.) A.O. Simões & M.E. Endress in Simões et al. (2010), which is endemic to Costa Rica, in the long and unequal sepals and hypocrateriform corollas. The two species can be separated as follows: T. donnell-smithii has domatia of white trichomes on the lower surface in leaf axils, sepals caducous after anthesis and warty, brown fruits, whereas T. pauli has leaves without domatia, sepals persistent in fruit and smooth green to green-yellowish fruits.
