Remarks: Spheroma spinosa Risso, 1816 ( Spheroma being an incorrect subsequent spelling of Sphaeroma ) and Sphaeroma spinosa Philippi, 1850 are homonyms. The latter name, if at a later date determined to represent a valid species but which is currently considered a taxon inquirendum within Sphaeroma , cannot be replaced without an application to the ICZN, as the current name for Spheroma spinosa is in a different genus, as Cymodoce spinosa ( Risso, 1816) (IZCN Article 23.9.5).
* Pillai (1965) appears to be the only author who previously used the correct form of this name.
