Dasymutilla yucatana (Cameron)
Sphaerophthalma [ sic.] yucatana Cameron, 1895 . Biol. Cent.-Amer., Hym. 2:366. Holotype male, Mexico, N. Yucatan (Gaumer) (No. 15.1041) [BMNH] (examined). Synonymy: Mickel (1964:165).
Mutilla yucatanicola Dalla Torre, 1897 . Cat. Hym. 8:99. Male (N. name).
Diagnosis of Male. The diagnostic character for this species is the scutellum having two large, curved (inward), lateral projections, unlike any other known species. Also, sternum II has a pit densely filled with setae, median in position and small in size. The pygidium has an apical fringe of setae. The apical fringe of tergum II, and terga III and IV entirely, are clothed with black setae. Terga V and VI are clothed with pale setae. The integument of tergum II has two coalescing ochraceous maculae.
Female. Unknown.
Distribution. Mexico (Yucatan).
Remarks. This species is known only from the male holotype. This male superficially resembles males of most Dasymutilla species from the eastern United States in having the integument entirely black except for yellow to orange maculae on tergum II, and in having the setae predominantly black.
