Type Locality: "Tokiwa Mura (Maneki, about 900 m altitude, foot of Mt. Gaki, Japan Alps), Kita-Azumi Gun, Nagano Pref., Central Honsyû [= Honshu], Japan ".
Vernacular Names: Azumi Shrew.
Synonyms: Sorex (Sorex) shiroumanus Imaizumi 1954 .
Distribution: Montane forests of C Honshu ( Japan).
Conservation: IUCN – Vulnerable.
Discussion: Subgenus Sorex . Imaizumi (1970 b) reported that hosonoi occurs sympatrically with shinto and therefore should be considered as separate species ( Corbet, 1978 c). Ohdachi et al. (1997 a, 2001) demonstrated that the species is genetically related to minutissimus .
