4. Smithia ciliata Royle (1835: 201) .
Type citation: — “This plant brought me from near Kedarkanta”
Lectotype (designated here): — INDIA. N.W. India, s.d., Royle s.n. (K000859005!); isolectotype ( CAL0000012751 About CAL !).
Residual syntypes: — INDIA. Uttarakhand, Kedarkanta, s.d., Royle s.n. (K000859007! and K000859006!).
Distribution: — Bhutan, China, Indonesia, Japan, Lesser Sunda Islands, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and India (Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Odisha, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and West Bengal).
Notes: — While describing Smithia ciliata, Royle (1835) mentioned only that “This plant brought me from near Kedarkanta”, but no type was indicated nor did he mention the name of collector, number of collection, date of collection and name of herbarium where specimens housed. Four herbarium specimens of Herbarium Royle of Smithia ciliata were traced, three at K (K000859005, K000859006 and K000859007) and one at CAL (CAL0000012751). The locality Kedarkanta is written on two specimens only (K000859006 and K000859007) and the remaining two with N.W. India. The latter two specimens can also be considered as original material because these specimens belong to Herbarium Royle and the locality Kedarkanta comes within N.W. India. No specimen was found at LIV, where Royle’s type specimens of Indian plants exist. Of these, the best one and better preserved sheet with complete plant specimens in having roots, stems, leaves and flowers, K000859005, is designated here as the lectotype as it agrees well with the protologue.
