Type: MB.Am.442, an excellent skull in dorsal view (skull length 180 mm) ( Fig. 5E View Figure 5 ) .
Type locality: Ohmbach , near Altenglan, Rheinland- Pfalz, Germany ( Fig. 1A View Figure 1 ) .
Type horizon: Ohmbach Carbonate Unit, Altenglan Formation, Autunian (Lower Rotliegend),?Upper Carboniferous (Gzhulfian) ( Fig. 1B View Figure 1 ).
Diagnosis: Autapomorphies, as contrasted with other Sclerocephalus species.
1. Internarial distance narrower than in other species.
2. Carinate marginal teeth (based on Macromerion guembeli Ammon, 1889 , see Boy, 1988).

Type: FG 321/1/129, a complete skull prepared from both sides (skull length 119 mm) ( Fig. 5D View Figure 5 ).
Type locality: Road-cut uphill of Gottlob quarry, Friedrichroda, Thuringia, Germany .
Type horizon: Upper Oberhof Beds, Oberhof Formation, Autunian (Lower Rotliegend), lower Permian (Asselian).
Diagnosis: Autapomorphies, as contrasted with other Sclerocephalus species.
1. Basipterygoid region fully ossified, but not sutured with parasphenoid.
2. Orbits relatively small, combined with moderately wide interorbital distance (interorbital width/skull length: 0.2).
