Ecological notes: very common in all types of woodland; heathland; wetlands including fen and reed beds, scrub and Sphagnum bog; bog and lakeshore and water meadows by river; gravel pits; calcareous grassland; school grounds with old poplars; gardens; parkland; old hedges. Reared from pupa in rotten wood, rotten beech and birch bark. v–x.
