Scatopsciara (Scatopsciara) subgrossa sp. n.

Locus typicus: USA, Texas, Sam Houston National Forest, 60 mi N Houston, Tanyard Road , mixed forest. Holotype: Male , 3.–6.xi.1996, leg. W. Mohrig, yellow trap ( PWMP).

Description. Male. Head. Brown. Eye bridge 2 facets wide. 4th flagellomere with l/w-index 2.4, haired as long as wide, neck rather long. Palpus short, 3-segmented, basal segment with sensory pit and 1 bristle. Thorax. Brown. Scutum haired brownish and short, a few lateral bristles longer; scutellum with two longer marginal bristles. Wings pale; R1 short, = 1/3 R; c long, = 2/3 w; y = x, without macrotrichia; posterior veins without macrotrichia. Haltere short, brownish. Coxae yellowish; legs brownish; tibial organ with 4–5 brownish bristles, comb-like; claws toothless. Abdomen. Brownish, haired short and brownish. Hypopygium brown; gonocoxites longer than gonostylus, inner ventral margin haired short and sparsely; intergonocoxal space broadly open. Gonostylus curved strongly, basally broad, with a rather long apical tooth and 2 somewhat shorter subapical spines. Tegmen wide, with large teeth; aedeagus rather long with a long basal furca. Body size: 1.8 mm.

Comments. The species is characterized by strongly curved gonostylus with a long apical tooth and two somewhat shorter subapical spines. It is similar to Sc. curviforceps (Bukowski & Lengersdorf) . It differs by longer flagellomeres, a stronger gonostylus, a broad intergonocoxal space and yellowish coxae. It belongs to the Sc. atomaria group.
