Status at New Ireland. New record, based on specimens observed at Kavieng fish market in 2004–2005 by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey ; a specimen photographed at St. KVG26 (off western Bauddisson Island ) by Serge Andréfouët on 23 Aug. 2014; a video of a specimen taken in Alexander Passage, southeast of New Hanover , at 5– 14 m depth, St. KR 96, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2.—General distribution: Red Sea, East Africa and Transkei ( South Africa) east to Hawaiian Islands and Pitcairn Group, north to southern Japan and Minami Tori Shima, south to northern Australia, New Caledonia and Tonga. Found in seaward reef areas, also in lagoons and around drop-offs, 2–40 m depth. Marine.
