Sarcophaga iuvenis Rondani, 1861 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1861g: 381 (key), 388 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ Parmae [Parma (Italy)]”.
TYPE MATERIAL: 3 ♂♂ (one of them is surely the holotype but is not labeled as such) ( MZUF: Box 19) with the following labels: 1 ♂ (head reduced to fragments entangled in the right fore-leg, missing left fore-leg, abdomen partly shriveled), Sarcophaga Mgn / juvenis [sic!] Rnd. ♂ / 1021 / = filia Pand. Rond. p. p. / lectotype ♂ [incorrectly designated] Sarcophaga juvenis [sic!] Rond. T. Pape det. 86 / Heteronychia filia Rond. T. Pape det.; 2 ♂♂ (one missing abdomen), Sarcophaga Mgn / juvenis [sic!] Rnd., ♂ / 1021 / paralectotype [incorrectly designated].
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of Sarcophaga (Heteronychia) filia Rondani 1860 View in CoL ( Verves 1986: 154, Pape 1988: 9, 1996: 327, Whitmore 2011: 32).
REMARKS: Rondani (1861g: 388) described Sarcophaga iuvenis from just the male sex without specifying the exact number of specimens, but giving a single measurement of length. In his redescription Rondani (1862d: 114) specified having a single male: “ Unicum marem … legi [I collected a single male]”. Pape (1988: 9) incorrectly designated a lectotype (♂) and paralectotypes (2 ♂♂) in the MZUF. There are three males in the MZUF without any label indicating their type status. We are unable to single out the male upon which Rondani based his description. We leave the recognition of the holotype to a future specialist.
