Cryptorhynchus tristis LeConte 1876:255 .

Natural history. Blatchley and Leng (1916) state that it feeds on leaves of scarlet oak ( Quercus coccinea Wang. ) at night and larvae develop under the bark.

Distribution. Fig. 24 . This species is found in the United States in AR, CT, D.C., FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, MI, MO, NC, NE, NJ, NY, PA, SC, TN, VA, WV (O’Brien & Wibmer 1982; specimens examined herein).

Diagnosis. Body length 5.0–6.0 mm ( Figs. 9–10 ). Pronotum with uniformly distributed erect or sub-erect scales, not arranged in concentrations or tufts; width at base almost as wide as elytra at base, about 1 1/3X wider than long. Femora each with 2 teeth, basal tooth larger. Elytra with concentrations of dark erect scales on intervals 3 and 5 throughout most of length. Male ventrite 5 ( Fig. 15 ) broadly shallowly impressed medially; ventrite 1 with pair of raised shiny sparsely setose swellings on each side of midline at apical margin. Aedeagus ( Fig. 20 ).
