Measurements. Total length 18.8–20.6; total width 10–11.3; head length 1.8–2.1; head width 3.2–3.5; length of antennal articles I: 0.7–1.1; II: 1.9–2.3; III: 1.2–1.6; IV: 3.4–4.0; V: 4.0–4.3; pronotum length 3.5–4.2; pronotum width 10.8–11.8; scutellum length 8.3–9.6; scutellum width 6.5–7.1.
Diagnosis. Species large (18–21mm) and dorsally green. Pronotum and scutellum with punctures dark brown or black not on dark spots, punctuation sparser than punctuation of P. polyta and P. irrorata . Corium with all veins yellow and also yellow stains. Connexivum completely green without spots or callous ( Fig. 13A View FIGURE 13 ); segment VII with base green and distal ½ to ¾ black. Body ventrally mostly greenish yellow or pale yellow with some parts light green, dark brown narrow lines on the edges of the sternites and pseudosutures. Evaporatorium with a black spot. Lateral margin of the abdomen with a green stripe corresponding to ventral part of connexivum. Antennae and legs yellow.
Head. Mandibular plates with dark lateral stripe. Tylus with dark margin ( Fig. 13A View FIGURE 13 ). ventral surface yellow. First rostral segment surpassing bucculae in lateral view.
Thorax. Pronotum sparsely punctured, punctures coarse ( Fig. 13A View FIGURE 13 ); cicatrices, delimiting furrows and surrounding calloused stripes concolorous with pronotum ( Fig. 13A View FIGURE 13 ), without spots or punctures. Anterolateral margin pale yellow to greenish yellow; line of light brown coarse punctures short, not reaching ¼ of the margin. Scutellum with coarse, large, black punctures sparser on anterior half than on posterior half, posterior punctures fine, dense and black ( Fig. 13A View FIGURE 13 ). Corium with all veins yellow. Propleura with brown stripe alongside brown or concolorous, fine and dense punctures; lateral margin green. Evaporatorium concolorous and slightly rugose with dark spots ( Fig. 13B View FIGURE 13 ). Peritreme long reaching 2/3 of the distance between ostiole of the scent gland and margin of the body. Metasternal process light green with arms broad and receiving fourth rostral segment ( Fig. 13B View FIGURE 13 ).
Abdomen. Connexivum with excavations concolorous, densely punctured only on inner margin; base of lateral spines green. Lateral part of segment VII, corresponding to ventral side of connexivum, greenish yellow with margin black. Spiracles on concolorous area. Small brown rounded spot close to spiracle on each segment ( Fig. 13B View FIGURE 13 ).
Male ( Fig. 7A–C View FIGURE 7 ). Pygophore with posterolateral angles barely flat laterally and slightly projected ( Fig. 7A View FIGURE 7 ). Superior process of the genital cup small and elliptical. Paramere with large anterior process, short and rounded posterior process, and arrow head like basal process; dorsal margin enlarged and sulcated ( Fig. 7B View FIGURE 7 ). Proctiger brown with posterior face yellow, short, not reaching level of posterolateral angles ( Figs 7 A, C View FIGURE 7 ); lateral excavation forming dorsally a small crest; dorsal part of posterior face tumid. Ventral rim medially brown; expansions barely developed and not tumid. Ventral surface mostly green with central suffused dark stripe and median spot; punctures fine and concolorous or light brown ( Fig. 7C View FIGURE 7 ). Phallus long, ventral part large, distal part developed and bitumid ( Fig. 10H View FIGURE 10 ).
Female ( Fig. 7D View FIGURE 7 ). Gonocoxites 8 with lateral margin almost straight and posterior margin slightly curved; punctures concentrated on basal part; sutural border excavated on distal half forming a "U"; internal margin rugose; carina from gonapophysis 8 visible. Gonocoxites 9 narrow, distal part straight; Laterotergites 8 with distal spine black slightly curved; clearly below the level of segment VII. Laterotergites 9 with small part of the base excavated; clearly below the level of laterotergites 8. Capsula seminalis globose, strongly developed; processes bulky and long, clearly exceeding anterior annular flange, increasing in length ( Fig. 11H). Ductus receptaculi (tdr) shorter than capsula seminalis.
Comments. The type of Edessa expolita was not indicated by Distant (1892) among the seven syntypes in the collection of The Natural History Museum (BMNH). One of the females has a red label, but it’s not clear if Distant labeled the specimen or not. Actually, the syntypes include females and males, so the labeled female was indicated as Lectotype. Distant described the dorsal main color as olivaceous, also part of the ventral color. The specimens studied here are light green beneath, so the color probably vanished. The pygophore ( Fig. 7C View FIGURE 7 ) has the same conservation problem found in P. ramosa , spots similar to punctures.
Distribution ( Fig. 15 View FIGURE 15 ). COSTA RICA: Alajuela, Heredia, Cartago, Puntarenas. PANAMA: Bocas del Toro.
