Pseudognathaphanus punctilabris ( MacLeay 1825)

Bates (1886 & 1889) list Pseudognathaphanus dispellens ( Walker, 1859) as occurring in Hong Kong. Kataev (2002) pointed out that P. dispellens is confined to Sri Lanka and the very similar P. punctilabris is the species with the larger distribution covering eastern Asia.

Specimens collected in Hong Kong were determined using Kataev’s (2002) key. Frontal impressions were present, a character typical of Pseudognathaphanus , but these beetles were possibly distinct from P. punctilabris ( MacLeay 1825) in the male genitalia, as described by Kataev (2002). Using Andrewes (1920b) the specimens key to Pseudognathaphanus rufitactor ( Bates, 1892) , but they seem to differ from both Andrewes (1920b) and Bates (1892) in having antennomere 3 black; elytral stria very weakly punctate and being slightly larger in size. W.T., November 2011;sight record W.T.L. 2.xii.15; 1 ex. W.T.L., 7.xii.11; sight record W.T.L., 8.xii.13. Biology: Imago found April and December to December. Can be attracted to light, it is fully winged and capable of flight.
