Revised description. Very large, moderately slender fusiform shell of nine teleoconch whorls; apical angle ~35°. High conical protoconch of 3.5 weakly convex whorls. Last protoconch whorl with narrow spiral cord at abapical suture and faint axial riblets close to transition to teleoconch. Transition to teleoconch marked by onset of widely spaced axial ribs and two spiral cords, forming two sharp, elevated carinae. Second teleoconch whorl markedly shouldered with weakly convex subsutural ramp; whorl profile below lower carina tapering strongly inwards to suture. Spiral sculpture of two weak cords on subsutural ramp, two prominent elevated cords, upper delimiting shoulder placed just below mid-whorl, lower placed short distance above suture, third weaker cord at abapical suture. Later teleoconch whorls with broad, steep subsutural ramp and two keel-like spiral cords, shoulder cord forming periphery, separated by deep concavity. Spiral cords developing spirally elongated nodes, often slightly bent adapically or abapically. Suture deeply incised, undulating. Axial ribs widen and weaken abapically, reduced to broad folds on last whorl. Whorls covered by delicate secondary and tertiary spiral cords crossing delicate growth lines, giving surface finely imbricate appearance. Last whorl wide, attaining ~60% of total height, with sharp shoulder; base rapidly constricting, weakly convex; siphonal canal and insignificant fasciole covered by very prominent primary spiral cords. Aperture pyriform. Columellar callus forming broad, sharply delimited rim. Columella smooth, moderately excavated in upper half, weakly twisted at transition to siphonal canal. Anal canal wide, indistinct, accentuated by small parietal denticle. Outer lip thickened, smooth within. Siphonal canal very long, narrow, straight.
Discussion. Pseudofusus austriacus (Hoernes & Auinger, 1890) belongs to the Pliocene to extant Pseudofusus rostratus complex. Gardella & Tabanelli (2013) even listed the specimens described by Hörnes (1853: pl. 32, figs 1–2) in the synonymy of the Pliocene Mediterranean Pseudofusus rostratus cingulatus ( Foresti, 1876) . Later, Tabanelli (2014), recognized that Hoernes & Auinger (1890) had provided Fusus austriacus as name for one of these specimens but still suggested that this species was a junior synonym of the Pseudofusus cingulatus . The Italian species, however, is much smaller and lacks the keel-like spiral cords (see Tabanelli 2014: pl. 7, fig. 5). In addition, it has a paucispiral protoconch (see Gardella & Tabanelli 2013: fig 3b) and the cords on the subsutural ramp are much stronger in P. cingulatus . Similarly, the Recent Pseudofusus rostratus ( Olivi, 1792) differs from P. austriacus in its mammillate paucispiral protoconch (see Russo 2013: fig. 9G). Pseudofusus rostratus may form comparable spirally elongated nodes (bengasiensis -morph of Sturany 1896).
Pseudofusus raouli ( Lozouet, 2015) , from the Chattian of Peyrehorade ( France) is similar to P. austriacus but differs in its weaker primary cord below the shoulder and the stronger cords on the subsutural ramp ( Lozouet 2015: pl. 14, figs 13–15).
Paleoenvironment. Occurrences in the Baden Formation of the Vienna Basin suggest middle to outer neritic environments in up to 250 m water depth ( Kranner et al. 2021). This is in line with the habitat preferences of the extant Pseudofusus rostratus , which is a deep-water species ( Negri & Corselli 2016).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (Middle Miocene): North Alpine-Carpathian Foredeep: Borač (= Boratsch) ( Czech Republic) (hoc opus); Vienna Basin: Bad Vöslau, Baden-Sooss, Baden ( Austria) (Hoernes & Auinger 1890).
