Ocelli in acute triangle; lateral ocelli closer to each other than to compound eyes; POL 0.7 × OOL. Mandible curved, long, length 4.3 × its width at median portion of mandible, with two sharpened apical teeth, basal most larger. Clypeus trapezoidal, wide, somewhat flat; LC 0.4 × WC; apical margin polished. Maxillary beard not present. Labrum not exposed. Antenna elongated; length of fourth segment 2.7 × its width; ratio of first four antennal segments 8:3:12:10; WA3 0.3 × LA3; LA3 0.9 × UID.

Mesosoma . Pronotum short ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A), width 4.4 × length on dorsal view, posterior margin angulated medially; collar short, almost absent; mesonotum with one superior-distal fovea. Notaulice absent. Metapostnotum striated. Propodeum punctures almost inconspicuous; propodeal disc weakly striated, striae thin, coarsely setose; setae short, equally abundant along length. Fore wing long ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A); maximum width 0.3 × its length; 2Cu cell oblique rectangular in shape, length 1.7 × its width; 3Cu cell 1.3 × longer than 2Cu; second recurrent vein curved, meeting 3Cu 0.2 × distance from base to apex of cell. Front tibia without spines; mid tibia with long, sharpened spines; hind tibia with long, sharpened teeth, dorsal scale-like teeth on one row; tibial brush complete, width almost constant. Tarsal claws dentate.

Metasoma. ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 A). Metasoma covered by short, appressed setae. Last tergum with long, thick setae; sting slightly curved.

Allotype, MALE. Body length 8.7 mm. Fore wing 10.0 mm; maximum wing width 3.1 mm. Coloration. ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B). Integument black with weak blue metallic reflections; mandible brown; antenna yellow, scape, pedicel and apical 4 antennal segments brown; wing infuscate; veins brown; pubescence black. Integument. Body pubescence abundant, long, erect on entire body ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B). Punctation small, conspicuous.

Description and measurements as defined for female, except: Head. ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 D). Head wide; inner sides of eyes parallel; TFD 1.6 × FD, MID 0.8 × FD. Mandible curved, long, length 4.0 × its width at median portion of mandible. Clypeus trapezoidal, wide, convex medially; LC 0.7 × WC; apical margin polished, not set off of clypeus. Antenna elongated, covered by short, thick setae; length of fourth segment 3.0 × its width; ratio of the first four antennal segments 24:10:30:32; WA3 0.4 × LA3; LA3 0.6 × UID. Mesosoma . Pronotum short; width 8.8 × length on dorsal view. Propleurum striated. Mesopleurum striated. Metapostnotum long, striated. Propodeal disc punctated, rounded, striated, coarsely setose, setae long; striated laterally. Front, mid and fore tibia with short, sharpened, sparse spines. Tarsal claw dentate. Metasoma ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 B). Metasoma covered by long, semi-appressed setae; T1 constricted distally, T2 wider, resembling node. Terga with long, thick setae.

Genitalia ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3. A – C D–F). Parapenial lobe split; lobe digit-shaped, wider medially, slightly constricted apically ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3. A – C D, E); parapenial lobe as long as paramere. Digitus wide, long, as long as paramere; ventral lobe with apex wide, rounded, straight on dorsal face, constricted on 1/3 basally; dorsal lobe short, truncate, sharpened and longer laterally, its length 0.6 × total genitalia length. Aedeagus short, its length about 0.6 × total genitalia length, lanceolate, apex bilobed; lobes rounded, touching each other ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3. A – C D). Paramere digital-shaped in lateral view, about same width along its length, wider on basal half in dorsal view; long, total length 0.6 × total genitalia length; apex rounded with setae; setae along paramere. Paramere setae thin, thicker on apex ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3. A – C D). Examined material. Holotype, ♀. HONDURAS: Cortés, Parque Nacional Cusuco, 5 Km N Buenos Aires, 15°29’N 88°13’W, Malaise trap in oak/pine cloud forest, R. Cave leg., 30.VII.1995 ( MZLU). Allotype, ♂. HONDURAS: Francisco Morazan, Parque Nacional La Tigra, 14°15’N 87°05’W, Malaise trap in oak/pine cloud forest, R. Cave leg., 4♂ 27.x.1995 ( MZLU).

Distribution. Honduras.

Etymology. This species was named in honor of Marius Wasbauer who has greatly contributed to the knowledge of Nearctic and Neotropical biodiversity for Pompilidae .

Variation. Last antennal segment of female can be more or less dark, looking yellow in some specimens and brown in others.

Host. Unknown.

Remarks. This species belongs to the subgenus Umbripennis. Priocnemis wasbaueri has the hind outer angle of the third submarginal cell acute and the female has distinct well-developed chevron teeth on the hind tibia. The male hind tibia, however, only has weakly developed teeth. Umbripennis only has three other described species in the New World: P. m i no r a t a Banks, P. nigripes (Cresson) and P. oregona Banks , all of which are found in the USA. None of these species have been reported from Mexico or further south. Priocnemis wasbaueri will key to P. minorata in Townes (1957). It, however, is easily separated from this species. Priocnemis wasbaueri has yellow flagellomeres with the apical flagellomere being slightly infuscated in the female, and the apical three to four flagellomeres being black in the male, while the antenna of P. minorata is completely black in both sexes. The apical margin of the clypeus of both sexes is truncated in P. wasbaueri , while the margin is broadly, but weakly emarginated, in the female, and broadly and deeply emarginate in the male of P. minorata .
