Porthetis carinata (Linnaeus, 1758) (Figs. 1-3)

Material examined: 11 specimens. South Africa (3♂) ; South Africa, Transvaal (1♂, 2♀) ; Mozambique, Laurenzo Marques (= Maputo) (3♀) ( MNHN) ; South Africa, Cape Town 1894, P. La Garde (1♀) ; South Africa, Cape Town, Prince Albert Rd. 26.XI-4.XII.1931 (1♂) ( MZUR) .

Remarks. Only one species is known in the genus Porthetis Serville, 1831 ; it is distributed in southern Africa, and the presence in the south of Mozambique was expected. P. carinata has the typical stridulatory system of some Porthetinae , consisting of the presence of bristles on the inner ventral side of the hind femora, the wrinkled Krauss’ organ and an inflated wrinkled area below it (Figs. 1-3) (see below the discussion on the stridulatory system of Porthetinae ).
