48. Ponera inversa   HNS . B.M.

Worker. Length 5 lines.-Black: the head longitudinally rugulose; the mandibles large, their inner edge with a row of sharp teeth. Thorax somewhat flattened anteriorly, closely and rather finely punctured, the lateral margins acute; the metathorax narrower and finely rugulose; the legs obscurely rufo-piceous; the anterior tarsi densely clothed beneath with fulvous pubescence. Abdomen oblong subcylindrical, the base truncate; the node incrassate, anteriorly curving forwards over the metathorax, the upper surface nearly oval, shining and finely punctured.

Var. The legs and base of the abdomen castaneous.
