Polyplectropus wainimbuk , new species
Figures 61–63 View FIGURES 61–63
Diagnosis: This species from the Fiji Islands ( Vanua Levu ) resembles P. vanda , new species in having simple gonopods. It is separated from P. vanda in having broader, nearly rectangular gonopods in ventral view, not apically narrowing as in P. vanda ; and the cerci are very complex, not simple.
Description: Male. Body uniformly brown. Maxillary palp formula (I,II)-IV-III-V; 3rd segment of each maxillary palp originating subapically on lateral face of segment 2. Forewing length 5.3 mm; each with discoidal cell and median cell closed; apical forks 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 present. Hind wings each with discoidal cell open; apical forks 1, 2, and 5 present.
Male genitalia. Sternite IX obliquely elongated to fulcra, with broad basal part and short mesoapical projection narrow in lateral view ( Fig. 61 View FIGURES 61–63 ) and broad in ventral view; sclerotized part of tergum IX membranous above fulcra; fulcrum on each side comprising base of cercus and paraproctal complex, membranous band of tergum IX connecting fulcra with membranous segment X. Segment X transparent, membranous, continuous with tergite IX; segments IX and X and sclerotized part of tergite VIII covering dorsal part of phallic apparatus. Cerci each bilobed, ventral process with serrate dorsal lobe near apex; cerci longer than gonopods. Paraproctal complexes fused with cerci, projecting anterad well before fulcra; dorsal paraproctal processes slender, arising from anterad-projecting bases of paraprocts, S-shaped, bending downwards to gonopods; paraproctal subphallic sclerite modified into pair of clavate processes, each with setose apex having enlarged setal alveoli, apical half broadened. Gonopods long, horizontal, monolobed, almost parallel-sided in lateral view ( Fig. 61 View FIGURES 61–63 ) and ventral view ( Fig. 62 View FIGURES 61–63 ); each with backward-directed basodorsal spine, mesal process near base invisible through sternite IX and gonopod in cleared preparations. Phallic apparatus ( Fig. 63 View FIGURES 61–63 ) located dorsally in genitalia, guided by dorsal paraproctal processes and modified processes of subphallic sclerite; phallic apparatus comprising arching tube-like sclerotized phallotheca with dorsal lobe and membranous endotheca or endophallus located ventrally; additional sclerites not visible.
