To judge from paratypes in the BMNH colln, the synonymy of this species with M. formosanus Takahashi ( Eastop & Hille Ris Lambers 1976) is incorrect. M. kawatabiensis occurs on Polygonum thunbergii in Japan, and possibly also in east Siberia (as M. formosanus, Pashtshenko 1988 ). (It might however be a synonym of the littleknown M. polygoniyonai Shinji , described from P. viscosum .)
