Polygonatum franchetii View in CoL
In the protologue of Polygonatum franchetii three collections made by R.P. Farges from what was then eastern Sichuan (now Chongqing)were cited ( Hua 1892).The syntypes traced at P(Farges 395 [two duplicate specimens], 526, 671 [three duplicate specimens]) are congruent with one another in morphology, but one specimen of Farges 671 (P00687090!), characterized by strictly alternate leaves and minute subulate bracteoles, actually belongs to P. cyrtonema Hua (1892: 393) . The individuals mounted on the herbarium specimen of Farges 526 (P00687089!) are not yet in anthesis which obscures the details of the perigone. Last, the two duplicate specimens of Farges 395 (P000687008!, P00038310!) show individuals in full anthesis and are most representative of the protologue: irregular, but predominately whorled or opposite phyllotaxy; scarious caducous inflorescence bracts that enclose the immature flowers; and a large inflated perigone with an exerted stigma. The specimen P000687008 is here selected as the lectotype (Art. 9.2 of ICN, McNeill et al. 2012).
