Altitudinal range. The localities indicated comprise a range of 1300–2900 m.

Remarks. The type locality is near Fresno, where a “Santa Ana” is located at 05°07’33”N 74°57’09”W. This species is similar to P. gibbonius , particularly when subadult specimens are examined. P. castaneus can be distinguished in having a generally thinner shell, a more oval aperture, and a much weaker columellar fold. In addition, P. castaneus almost always has brown/maroon interior and edges of the peristome, whereas P. gibbonius frequently (but not always) has lighter coloration in both areas. There is partial overlap in the distribution of these species, particularly in central Colombia; however, the records available suggest that P. gibbonius extends further north (i.e., Boyacá, Santander, Magdalena), whereas P. castaneus extends further south (Cauca, Huila).
