Remarks on synonymy of Glabellula . In preparing the world catalog of Mythicomyiidae (Evenhuis, 2002b) , I was informed by Dr. Miguel Alonso-Zarazaga that Sphaerogaster Sturm, 1826 was a nomen nudum; and Sphaerogaster Zetterstedt, 1842 was thus not preoccupied. Being a senior synonym of Glabellula Bezzi, 1902 , its existence thus potentially threatened the stability of the usage of the name Glabellula . Using the procedures for Reversal of Precedence, Evenhuis (2002b: 28) deemed Sphaerogaster Zetterstedt, 1842 to be a nomen oblitum and Glabellula Bezzi, 1902 to be a nomen protectum.
Subsequent to the publication of Evenhuis (2002b), I was informed by Dr. F.C. Thompson that Sphaerogaster Sturm, 1826 was not a nomen nudum and the action of Reversal of Precedence was unnecessary. A check of Sturm (1826: 34) during this study corroborates Thompson’s claim. Although brief, the statement by Sturm: “Von der Aehnlichkeit mit einer schwarzen Spinne” [From the resemblance to a black spider]” is enough wording of “characters to differentiate” to make the genus-group name available in that work.
