Platycleis species in Turkey
Data about Platycleis species of Turkey can be found in BolõÂvar (1899), Brunner von Wattenwyl (1882), CË õplak (1992), CË õplak et al. (1993, 1996), Demirsoy (1974, 1975), Harz (1969), KarabagÏ (1949, 1950, 1958), KarabagÏ et al. (1971, 1981), Ramme (1930, 1951), Salman (1978), Sevgili (1997), Uvarov (1934), Werner (1901), and some other papers. In these studies 21 species have been recorded. Due to new ®ndings during the present study, some nomenclatural changes had to be made and two new species were added.

Subgenus Yalvaciana subg. n. yalvaci (Demirsoy, 1974) (transferred from subgenus Decorana Zeuner, 1941 )
Otte (1997) gives the type locality of P. irritans Ramme, 1951 as Turkey?, Tschubuchly, but on labels of the type series it is mentioned as Armenia (Armenian) by Ramme himself. Thus, it is not included in this study.
Descriptions of many species can be found in Ramme (1951) or Harz (1969), for the other species references to detailed descriptions are mentioned in the text of the respective species.
As indicated by Ragge (1990), for correct identi®cation of Platycleis species the calling song is very helpful (`for reliable identi®cation the song should be used whenever possible’). For many European Platycleis species song descriptions and sound recordings are available ( Heller, 1988; Ragge and Reynolds, 1998) which should be useful for the identi®cation of the widespread species (for all Turkish species of the subgenera Platycleis , Tessellana , Sepiana and for P. (Incertana) incerta ). Unfortunately, not many sound recordings are available from Turkey or from species endemic to Turkey. Published recordings from Turkey are mentioned under the respective species. For further help in identi®cation, we will present oscillograms from P. armeniaca and P. taurica whose songs have not been published before.

All specimens mentioned in`Material examined’ are deposited in the Zoological Museum of Akdeniz University, Antayla ( Turkey) ( AUZM, Collectio CË õplak) except otherwise stated. at of by Turkey in the literature ( Ramme, 1930, 1951; Uvarov, 1934; KarabagÏ, 1950; Demirsoy, 1974, 1975; Salman, 1978; CË õplak, 1992). For each species the range (minimum±maximum) for all data found is presented. All measurements are given in mm and refer to the length. Stridulatory ®les were studied with a light microscope.
For recordings of the song the following equipment has been used: Uher 4200 IC with Uher M 645 microphone (in the ®eld) and Rascal store 4 D with microphones, BruÈel and Kjaer 4133 and 4135 in the laboratory. Oscillograms were made using a PC and the program Turbolab (Stemmer AG). Wing movements were registered by an opto-electronic device ( Heller, 1988).
In this text the following terms were used to de®ne the sound ®les: (i) syllable, the sound produced with two-direction (opening and closing) movement of the fore wings, (ii) hemisyllable, the sound produced with one-direction (opening or closing) movement of the fore wings, and (iii) echeme, each of the separate assemblage of syllables.
