Phalonidia tolli Razowski, 1960 View in CoL
Phalonidia tolli View in CoL was described from the male holotype ( Fig. 8A View FIGURES 8 A – 8 C –C) collected 25 June 1938 in China, Manchuria, prov. Kirin, Djalantun ( Razowski 1960). Razowski later (1970) synonymised this taxon with P. manniana View in CoL , although with doubts, as an examination of European material revealed that the male genitalia of P. manniana View in CoL exhibit some variation. He concluded that the problem of intrapecific variation could only be resolved with additional material from Manchuria ( Razowski 1970). We examined the holotype and it agrees with P. udana View in CoL in characters of the male genitalia, particularly the shape of the valva with the acute angle between the sacculus and the cucullus. The median process of the transtilla is relatively short, but falls within the range of variation we have seen in our material of P. udana View in CoL ( Figs. 7 View FIGURE 7 , 8 View FIGURES 8 A – 8 C B, 8C). The wings are rather rubbed, but the dorsal half of the median fascia is heavily suffused with dark scales ( Fig. 8A View FIGURES 8 A – 8 C ). This is not indicative of either P. manniana View in CoL or P. udana View in CoL . Based on the male genitalia we conclude that P. tolli View in CoL is a junior synonym of P. udana View in CoL , syn. nov. It is, however, possible that P. tolli View in CoL represents a third species and the revised synonymy with P. udana View in CoL remains to be verified with further material from the Far East.
