Phaeographopsis indica ( Patwardhan & Nagarkar 1979: 137) Sipman & Aptroot View in CoL in Aptroot et al. (2007: 114)

This peculiar lichen was described as Phaeographis indica by Patwardan & Nagarkar (1979), and subsequently placed in the new genus Phaeographopsis ( Aptroot et al. 1997) . Due to a formal error (the page of the basionym was given as an interval), this combination was invalid, but was later validated by the authors (Aptroot et. al. 2007). In that paper, P. indica was also reported from Chiang Mai province as a new addition to the Thai lichen biota. But as these authors did not separate P. indica with norstictic acid from P. palaeotropica with salazinic acid, it was not clear to which species their specimen belongs. In the course of extensive lichen collecting in many Thai provinces, we found P. indica with norstictic acid so that the occurrence of this species in Thailand is confirmed.

Distribution and habitat:— P. indica is so far known from India and Thailand where it is found growing on the bark of unidentified trees in evergreen forests and secondary rainforests.

Material from Thailand examined:— Phetchaburi province: Kaeng Krachan district ; road from Ban Krang Camp to ‘Stream 1’, in a humid secondary rainforest along a creek, 340 m, 12°48’12’’ N, 99°26’32’ E, 8 December 2015, J. Sutjaritturakan & K. Kalb (Hb. K. & J. Kalb 41262).
