Revised description. Shell medium-sized, solid, with weakly gradate spire; apical angle ~35°. Protoconch not preserved. Teleoconch of at least ten whorls. Early teleoconch whorls weakly concave with flat subsutural and suprasutural cords, separated by concave mid-portion bearing close-set, strongly opisthocline axial riblets. On third whorl riblets fade. At mid-whorl bearing fine narrow spiral cords. Abapically whorl profile subcylindrical with concave mid-portion, gradate. Subsutural cord swells to form broad, rounded collar. Mid-portion narrow. Concave, spirals weaken and disappear, suprasutural cord also broadens, rounded. Whorl profile subcylindrical with marked concavity. Last whorl 61–65% of total height. Subsutural collar rounded, subobsoletely or weakly tubercular in some specimens. Subsutural ramp concave. Shoulder very low-set, inflated, rounded. Base weakly angular and delimited, moderately constricted at base. Siphonal fasciole swollen, slightly twisted with prominent growth increments; extremely weak spirals over base and siphonal fasciole. Aperture moderately wide, ovate. Outer lip not thickened, smooth within. Anal sinus moderately wide, moderately deep, asymmetrically U-shaped, with apex mid-ramp. Siphonal canal moderately short, moderately wide, slightly deflected to the left, with shallowly notched tip. Columella weakly excavated, weakly twisted at fasciole, smooth. Columellar and parietal callus thick, sharply delimited, forming broad callus rim.
Discussion. This species was confused by Hörnes (1854) with Tomellana jouannetii ( Des Moulins, 1842) , from the Burdigalian of Mérignac in France, which at that time was only illustrated by Grateloup (1846: pl. 21, fig. 12). [Note that the correct spelling of the French species as given by Des Moulins (1842: 143) is: Pleurotoma jouannetii ]. The illustrations of Paratethyan specimens in Hörnes (1854), which are not conspecific with the Atlantic species from France, distorted the understanding of Tomellana jouannetii for subsequent authors. Even Cossmann (1896: pl. 5, fig. 1) illustrated a specimen from Lăpugiu de Sus ( Romania) as Perrona jouannetii instead of referring to Atlantic material. Peyrot (1931, pl. 8, figs 43, 61, 62, 66, 71) clarified the confused situation by illustrating topotypic specimens of T. jouannetii . Thus, Tomellana jouannetii differs from P. lydiae in its conical spire and wider apical angle. Its subsutural collar is relatively sharply delimited from the concave part of the whorls, which is not the case in P. lydiae , and its siphonal canal is longer and straighter. Furthermore, Tomellana jouannetii lacks the commashaped riblets of early teleoconch whorls of Perrona lydiae , which are characteristic of the genus Perrona .
An aberrant specimen with few weak tubercles from Baden-Sooss ( Austria), was misidentified by Hoernes & Auinger (1891) as Perrona styriaca , from which it differs in its less gradate, but higher spire and more slender outline.
The oldest available name for this species might by Pleurotoma splendida Handmann, 1882 . Handmann (1882; 265) described a 22 mm high specimen from Gainfarn ( Austria). The general description would fit that of a subadult specimen of P. lydiae . The holotype of Pleurotoma splendida might have been stored in the Kollegium Kalksburg in Vienna, a Catholic private school, but we could not trace the specimen. Thus, P. splendida is treated as nomen dubium.
Paleoenvironment. The occurrences at Gainfarn, Enzesfeld and Steinebrunn suggest inner neritic environments with sea grass meadows ( Zuschin et al. 2007).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Badenian (middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Baden-Sooss, Bad Vöslau, Enzesfeld, Gainfarn, Steinebrunn, ( Austria) ( Hoernes & Auinger 1891; Sieber 1958b), Mikulov (the Czech Republic), Borský Mikuláš ( Slovakia) ( Švagrovský 1958); Oberpullendorf Basin: Ritzing ( Austria) (hoc opus); Pannonian Basin: Püspöklak ( Hungary) ( Strausz 1966): Krka Basin: Gorenja Stara, Šentjernej ( Slovenia) ( Mikuž 1998, 2009).
