Polypedilum (Pentapedilum) ruandae Freeman
( Fig. 30)
Pentapedilum ruandae Freeman, 1955a: 30 View in CoL ; Freeman and Cranston (1980: 195).
Polypedilum (Pentapedilum) ruandae Freeman ; Freeman (1958: 299).
Material examined. DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO: Lake N’Gando near Ruanda, Volcano Karisimbi, 2.400 m a.s.l., paratypes male, female, 6.iii.1935, G. F. deWitte ( BMNH) .
Diagnostic characters. Among species with less than 100 setae in cell m 1+2, but slightly more in cell r 4+5, and foretibial scale with spur, the species is characterized by having cell m basal of RM bare, base of superior volsella bare, and an AR of about 1.75. In the female the wing is broader and the macrotrichia in all cells are denser. The dorsomesal lobe is broad caudally, and the ventrolateral lobe is arc-shaped with brush-like bristles.
Male (n = 1)
Total length. Wing length 2.37 mm. Wing length / length of profemur 2.44. Brown.
Head. Antenna incomplete, but AR according to Freeman (1955a) about 1.75. Temporal setae 13, including 3 inner verticals, 7 outer verticals, and 3 postorbitals. Clypeus with 21 setae. Tentorium 152 µm long, 6 µm wide at posterior tentorial pit. Stipes 169 µm long. Palp lost.
Thorax. Acrostichals 14, dorsocentrals 20, prealars 5. Scutellum apparently with 5 setae.
Wing ( Fig. 30A). Anal lobe reduced. VR 1.21. Brachiolum with 1 seta, R with 26, R 1 with 18, R 4+5 with 42, Sc bare, RM with 1, M with 3, M 1+2 with 49, M 3+4 with 15, Cu 1 with 6 and An with 28 setae, Cu and PCu bare. Cells r 4+5, with about 100, m 1+2 with about 72 macrotrichia, m 3+4, cell m basal of RM and an plus cu bare. Squama with 6 setae.
Legs. Scale on foretibia ( Fig. 30B) 32 µm long, with 13 µm long apical spur. Spurs on midtibia ( Fig. 30C) 69 µm long, on hind tibia ( Fig. 30D) 65 µm long. Comb on midtibia 17 µm long, combs on hind tibia 26 µm and 24 µm long. Width at apex of foretibia 55 µm, of midtibia 57 µm, of hind tibia 67 µm. Length and proportions of legs as in Table 38.
Hypopygium ( Fig. 30E). Tergite IX with 9 median setae, laterosternite IX with 2 setae. Anal point 69 µm long, 21 µm wide at base, gradually tapering to nearly parallel-sided towards 10 µm wide apex. Transverse sternapodeme 38 µm long; phallapodeme 79 µm long. Gonocoxite 164 µm long. Superior volsella ( Fig. 30G) 70 µm long, base bare with 3 inner setae, projection with 1 lateral seta. Inferior volsella ( Fig. 30F) 145 µm long, parallel-sided, with prominent apical seta. Gonostylus 145 µm long. HR 1.13.
Female (n = 1)

Stipes 150 µm long. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 43, 60, 179, 145, last segment not measurable. Third palpomere with 2 sensilla clavata.
Wing. Anal lobe reduced. VR 1.12. Brachiolum with 1 seta, R with 33, R 1 with 41, R 4+5 with 80, Sc bare, RM with 1, M with 19, M 1+2 with 68, M 3+4 with 42, Cu with 21, Cu 1 with 20, PCu with 19 and An with 33 setae.
