Type series

SYNTYPES: 11 „„, 2 ♀♀ TANZANIA: ‘‘ Afrique orientale allemande: Forêt du Kilimandjaro, au-dessus du Narangu (versant Sud-Est); alt. 1.800 à 2.000 m., IV-1912. (Mission Ch. ALLUAUD et R. JEANNEL.)’’ (Le Cerf 1912:337). MNHN ‘‘11 „ 2 ♀ in coll. du Muséum de Paris’ ’ (Le Cerf 1912:337). [2 „„ in BMNH: BMNHE # 705082 , 705087 – examined] .

Type discussion

Described from the 13 individuals listed above. No holotype was selected, and so far as we are aware no lectotype has been designated. The two syntype males now in BMNH both have determination labels in Le Cerf’s hand including their status (as ‘‘co-type’’). They reached BMNH via the Joicey Bequest ( BMNH Entomology Accession 1934-120). BMNHE # 705087 was photographed for the GART project (see Häuser et al. 2005b) with the specimen identification number 19604 .

Taxonomy discussion

Princeps fuelleborni neocesa Kemal and Koçak, 2005 , was proposed as a replacement name for Papilio sjoestedti var. atavus Le Cerf, 1912 , which they stated to be preoccupied by Papilio polytes perversus ♀ -f. atavus Rothschild, 1895:353. However, under the ICZN (1999) Code, Article 54.1, the latter was established infrasubspecifically, is thus excluded from the provisions of the Code, and does not enter into homonymy.
