Orthorhinus cylindricus Montrouzier, 1861a: 884 .

Orthorhinus View in CoL a ffinis Montrouzier, 1865: 162 n. syn.

DESCRIPTION. — Integument dark brown or black; scaling moderately dense, yellowish brown, often paler or whitish on frons and rostrum, and forming a faint or distinct inverted V design on middle of elytra; head in front with two dark, asperate dots in amongst imbricate scaling.

Head flat anteriorly, densely squamose except for a glabrous dot on either side, with or without distinct granules; smooth posterior area dull. Rostrum in male moderately robust, curved near apex, as long as or slightly longer than prothorax, 3.5-5.0x longer than wide at apex, very slightly saddled against frons; postrostrum densely and coarsely punctate, usually with a fine carina on either side, with or without a median carina, coarsely and rugosely punctate laterad from fine carinae, usually densely squamose dorsally between carinae; prorostrum as long as wide; rostrum in female slenderer, straight or nearly so, 1.24-1.35 x longer than prothorax, 6.7-8.8 x longer than wide at apex, more deeply saddled than in male, finely punctate, with one or two basal grooves on either side, these usually filled with scales; prorostrum 2.3-3.2 x longer than wide at apex. Prothorax 1.05-1.17 x wider than long, usually rounded on sides, moderately convex, uniformly granulose.

Elytra distinctly granulose. Abdomen in male shallowly impressed at base, with decumbent pubescence. Fore coxae contiguous or nearly so. Fore femora finely asperate on lower edge, with distinct, more or less perpendicular tooth; hind femora not extending beyond tip of abdomen. Fore tibiae in male robust, short, not extending to trochanter when folded, with strong tooth opposite femoral tooth, distinctly asperate between tooth and apex; hind tibiae with strong tooth at apical one-third. Fore tarsi in male with fringe of long white hairs, segment 2 symmetrical, distinctly longer than wide.

Male: tegmen as in Fig. 172, with long, narrow, for most part fused parameral lobes. Aedeagus as in Fig. 173, strongly pigmented on sides and apex, with a broad pale rim on either side at apex, 0.75-1.10 mm long, 0.235 -0.325 mm wide, a little wider near basal one-third or two-fiths, broadly rounded at apex, weakly curved in lateral view; apodemes 1.58-1.80 x longer than body; internal sac with basal sclerite approximately as long as aedeagal body, with a pair of small, sometimes partly fused median sclerites, a narrow steering plate and, usually, with fine, crossing over ostial rods connected to ostial valves.

Female: hemisternites and spermataheca as in Figs 174, 175.

Length: 4.3-10.5 mm.

TYPE MATERIAL. — 1) Orthorhinus cylindricus : 6 syntype specimens present. Lectotype male, 9.0 x 3.1 mm, ‘ Orthorhinus cylindricus Montr. , Balade’ [in Perroud’s writing], small red disk, Coll. Perroud, MNHN. Paralectotypes: 1 male, 3 females, Coll. Perroud, Coll. M. Pic, MNHN; 1 male, Orthorhinus cylindricus (mihi), N. Caled. Sud [in Montrouzier’s writing], rec. Montrouzier, Le Moult, IRSN. 2) Orthorhinus affinis from 2 syntype male specimens. Lectotype male, 9.5 x 3.3 mm, ‘ O. affinis (m), Jaté’ [in Montrouzier’s writing], rec. Montrouzier, Le Moult, IRSN. Paralectotype: 1 male, Yaté, Coll. Fauvel, IRSN. Identified specimens with BPBM, IRSN, MNHN, MNHW, NZAC, QMBA, SRFP .

MATERIAL EXAMINED. — New Caledonia. Aoupinié, Balade, Mt. Rembai , Néhoué, Nouméa, Païta, Pindal, Plateau de Dogny , Bourail, Canala, Chutes de la Madeleine, Col d’Amieu, Col des Plateau de Tango , Pocquereux nr La Foa, Sarraméa, Tchamba, Roussettes, Conception, Dumbéa, Farino, Forêt de Thi, Forêt Yambé. Loyalty: Lifou, Maré. Île des Pins. 153 specimens .

Nord, Houaïlou, Mandjélia, La Crouen, Les Pirogues, Mt. Koghi,

HOSTPLANTS. — Not established, but larva apparently in freshly dead wood of different trees and shrubs. Adults found on Litchis chinensis , Schefflera grabiellae .

ETYMOLOGY. — The name of the species refers to the overall cylindrical habitus of the species.

REMARKS. — O. cylindricus is a widespread, common species. It varies a good deal in size. The length/width ratio differs according to size of specimens, higher values corresponding to larger specimens. Perroud (1865) did not see specimens of O. affinis but included in the paper a brief description of Montrouzier, whence the author of the species is Montrouzier alone.
