Type material. Holotype NHMW 1864/0001/0587, illustrated by Hörnes (1855: 428, pl. 43, fig. 4) as Turritella marginalis Brocc. var.; Steinebrunn ( Austria), middle Miocene, Badenian.

Studied material. 1 spec. NHMW 1864/0001/0587, Steinebrunn ( Austria (holotype), 1 spec. NHMW 1963/0053/0000, Niederleis ( Austria), 2 spec. NHMW 2018/0203/0002–NHMW 2018/0203/0003, Mikulov-Kienberk ( Czech Republic).

Revised description. Shell medium sized, tall, slender. Protoconch and early teleoconch whorls unknown. Earliest preserved teleoconch whorls weakly campanulate with moderate mid-whorl angulation; suture superficial. Sculpture comprising about 20 broad secondary spiral cords with flat tops, separated by narrow interspaces; secondary spiral cords increasing to 35 on latest teleoconch whorls. Post-neanic whorls nearly flat sided with weak mid-whorl angulation separating faintly concave adapical and abapical halves of whorl. Suture superficial, slightly wavy. Lateral sinus with low to moderately steep angle; wide, shallow with faint adapical inflection point close to suture; adapical part of LS simple; basal sinus weakly opisthocyrt; central LS p. Base flat with numerous secondary spiral cords. Aperture incomplete, but probably subquadratic based on cross-section of last whorl.

Shell measurements. No complete specimen available; largest fragment suggests a maximum height of ~ 52 mm and a maximum diameter of ~ 14 mm. PA: 11–12°. Lateral sinus (n = 5): LS angle = 10.9° (σ = 1.2°), LS p = 1.0 (σ = 0.1), LS d = 6.2 (σ = 0.3).

Discussion. The slender shape, flat sided teleoconch whorls and especially the sculpture of close-set delicate flat spiral cords of equal strength are reminiscent of Oligodia guillaumei (Brébion in Lauriat-Rage et al. 1989) and O. palumbina Van Dingenen, Ceulemans & Landau 2016 , from the lower Pliocene of the Loire Basin in France ( Van Dingenen et al. 2016). The main difference is the larger size of O. palumbina (attaining up to 78 mm in height) and the slightly higher whorls. Van Dingenen et al. (2016) documented a B–D pattern of primaries on neanic whorls of O. palumbina , which is typical for Oligodia . This feature is not preserved on the Paratethyan shells but based on its morphologic similarity with O. guillaumei and O. palumbina , we tentatively place it in Oligodia .

The illustration in Hörnes (1855, pl. 43, fig. 4) is strongly idealized and therefore somewhat misleading. The specimen had a severe trauma as a juvenile, indicated by a fracture through the entire fourth (preserved) teleoconch whorl. Sacco (1895) separated the specimen illustrated by Hörnes (1855) from Turritella (Haustator) marginalis ( Brocchi, 1814) as new species. A comparison with the Pliocene Haustator marginalis ( Brocchi, 1814) , as illustrated by Rossi-Ronchetti (1955), Caprotti (1975), Pinna & Spezia (1978), and Chirli (2006), fully supports Sacco’s view. Especially the spiral sculpture is clearly different (few thin spiral cords in H. marginalis versus numerous comparatively broad spiral bands in O. sulcomarginalis ). Moreover, the Paratethyan species lacks the angulation of the whorls close above the abapical suture.

The Hungarian specimens described by Csepreghy-Meznerics (1956), Strausz (1966), and Bohn-Havas (1973) are not conspecific with Oligodia sulcomarginalis and differ in their much broader shells and different sculpture, which (at least) partly are reminiscent of Helminthia vermicularis . Therefore, Strausz (1966) erroneously treated his specimens as subspecies of H. vermicularis . Specimens described by Eremija (1971a) from Bosnia-Herzegovina might be conspecific but are too incomplete for a clear identification. Occurrences in the Badenian of Lăpugiu de Sus in the Transylvanian Basin ( Romania), mentioned by Neugeboren (1856) and Boettger (1897, 1902), were reidentified as Turritella striatellata Sacco by Boettger (1907).

Paleoenvironment. The assemblage from Steinebrunn suggests shallow sublittoral environments and sea grass (herein). Similarly, at the Niederleis section, sediment and biota from coastal and lagoonal environments not exceeding 30 m water depth were transported by tempestites into offshore settings ( Mandic et al. 2002).

Distribution. Central Paratethys. Badenian (middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Steinebrunn ( Austria), Mikulov- Kienberk ( Czech Republic) (herein);? Prnjavor Basin ( Bosnia Herzegovina) ( Eremija 1971a).
