Odontophotopsis denticoxa Mickel

( Figs. 4, 5 View FIGURES 1 – 12 )

Odontophotopsis (Odontophotopsis) denticoxa Mickel , in Mickel and Clausen 1983. Ann. Ent. Soc. Am. (n. s.) 76: 547, male. Holotype: Mexico, Sonora , 3 mi N Hermosilla, 25.May.1961, Howden and Martin (CNCI).

Diagnosis. This species can be separated from other species in this group by the following combination of characters: the ocellar area is usually dark, the ocellocular distance is ~1.5X the width of the lateral ocellus, the ventral margin of the mandible is angulate ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 12 ), the mesosternal processes are simple, and the lamellate process of the middle coxa is broader than high ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 12 ). Although the genitalia are very similar to those of O. dentifera , the cuspis is distinct as it usually bears two setae, one short and slender, and another that is 2X longer and thicker ( Mickel and Clausen 1983).

Distribution. Sonoran Desert of Sonora , Mexico.

Material examined. MEXICO, Sonora , Hermosilla, 3 mi N, 1 male paratype, 25.May.1961, Howden and Martin ( UMSP).

Remarks. Mickel and Clausen (1983) illustrated the genitalia, which is similar to O. dentifera . No new material has been collected. After more specimens of this species become available, this species and the next species may be synonyms based on the minor morphological differences between the two species.
