Genus diagnosis. Sexual dimorphism clearly visible. Male: Tegmen wide, costal (C) and subcostal (Sc) veins strongly sinuous (S-shaped) ( Glyptobothrus with C and Sc veins straight or weakly sinuate); precostal field with a bulge ( Stenobothrus with straight anterior basal margin on tegmina); hind wings dark black; tympanum slit-shaped, 3.5–6 times longer than wide ( Chorthippus s. str. and subgen. Altichorthippus with oval-shaped tympanum, 1.5–3 times longer than wide); anterior margin of hind wings unremarkable, femoro-tegminal stridulation ( Stauroderus with widened anterior cells on hind wings, tegmino-alary stridulation). Female: Hind wings black, (less so than males); tympanum 4–10 times longer than wide; ovipositor without dorsal tooth on each valve. ( Stenobothrus with dorsal teeth).
