Genus Megaselia Rondani, 1856

Thirty-five species of this megadiverse cosmopolitan genus were previously recorded in Israel ( Disney & Nussbaum, 1990; Disney, 2010; Lengyel, 2011a). These are Megaselia aequalis (Wood, 1909) , M. albicaudata (Wood, 1910) , M. bovista (Gimmerthal, 1848) , M. brevicostalis (Wood, 1910) , M. brevifemorata Schmitz, 1926 , M. capronata Schmitz, 1940 , M. clemonsi Disney, 1984 , M. collini (Wood, 1909) , M. curtineura (Brues, 1909) [= M. palaestinensis (Enderlein, 1933) ], M. curvicapilla Schmitz, 1947 , M. deltomera (Schmitz, 1924) , M. diversa (Wood, 1909) , M. elongata (Wood, 1914) , M. flava (Fallén, 1823) , M. giraudii (Egger, 1862) , M. halterata (Wood, 1910) , M. intersecta Schmitz, 1935 , M. latifrons (Wood, 1910) , M. latior Schmitz, 1936 , M. longicostalis (Wood, 1912) , M. malhamensis Disney, 1986 , M. meconicera (Speiser, 1925) , M. melanocephala (von Roser, 1840) , M. nigra (Meigen, 1830) , M. oxybelorum Schmitz, 1928 , M. pleuralis (Wood, 1909) , M. pulicaria (Fallén, 1823) , M. pumila (Meigen, 1830) , M. rufipes (Meigen, 1804) , M. stichata (Lundbeck, 1920) , M. subpleuralis (Wood, 1909) , M. subscaura Schmitz, 1932 , M. superciliata (Wood, 1910) , M. verralli (Wood, 1910) , M. xanthozona (Strobl, 1892) . There is little doubt that the real number of species may increase two- or three-fold after a dedicated study of Israeli Megaselia .
